Considering the price I'm ok with his slow start. And besides he has a wealth of wisdom he can pass down to the likes of Kuzma, Caruso, KCP, THT. Mathews has been a 3 and D starter for an entire decade, he's at the twilight of his career just like Gasol. Hope we can squeeze one last run of these guys but their true value is only felt in the playoffs and in how they help out our youngins
Meh he's no worse than Green last year. I do think Lakers twitter has pointed out he's been historically a better on ball defender rather than a "chaser" around PnR Team needs to figure out how to use him: I think both him and Kuzma are better situated with a Kawhii rather then George who likes working around screen. I'll give him some time
I really think he'd benefit more from the spacing with Bron and AD. Those corner 3s will get a lot easier next to them. I agree that the rhythm gained by starting would help too. Either way, not worried. He's a vet, he's smart, and he and Vogel will figure it out. He did have a couple really nice defensive plays against Luka. Didn't stop him, but guys like that it's about making him work for it.
He FINALLY saw a couple go through the rim in the 3rd Q. He wasn't unleashed like the other vet addition was (Marc, if you didn't see the game). But hopefully that's enough to build on. In a Mitch off season, he and Marc would've been our only additions and we would all be losing our s*** for paying $15m a year for each. Instead we have them for pennies and they're getting there slowly. Marc's night probably kept the critics at bay and Wes' night is coming.
Yeah, it was great to see a couple/few finally go in for Wes. He'll be fine. Just needs more time to acclimate to the new team. He's a hellofa defender. The offense will come. I mean we waited all year patiently last season for Danny Green and it never came. And he was getting that $15 million not the Biannual exception.
We're so deep in terms of scoring that he can relax and just play defense until that 3-point shot comes naturally to him. He's a really good defender, I like what he does against screens out there.
His 3pt shot will rise to the mean, I’m sure. I was just teasing about the Lakers shooting curse. Remember last year when KCPoop started the year like 2-19 and they were like waaaaay off? Then he ended up being our most consistent shooter.
Judging by the early stats, KCP is one of our worst 3-point shooters, but one of our best shot blockers, so there's that.
He's been a starter pretty much his whole career and he's adjusting to coming off the bench. We're gonna need him as a stopper in the playoffs but for now the team can weather his struggles
i know you're trying to be snarky, but green's value was that a) teams pay attention to him at the three point line (starting to go away) and b) he's a very good team defender. he was a + for us last year despite not hitting the broad side of a barn most of the time. wes is a very good man defender but just an ok team defender, which is probably less than ideal for us. though he makes a lot less money, is more likely to actually make shots, and might be of great use against paul georges and such in the playoffs.
its a dumb n misleading stat, sorry i cant justify someone going 0/4 or 3/20 and saying hes a positive contributor and other advance stats says Green was a net negative
And Wes did indeed have his day! Yeah 6 for 6 from three is pretty good! Great to see him slowly getting into his groove here. As I said I wasn’t concerned and felt like it was coming.
