For a small ball center Black is a lot younger, more athletic, probably as strong, good at P&R, runs the floor a lot better and has Big soft hands. No?
ew no. I've never liked his game. He can provide some spacing with his shooting, but the energy, athleticism, and hustle that Black provides off the bench will be significantly more valuable to this team.
Oh I wouldn't want to compare defense between Black and Speights. Black is a superior player to Speights. You don't have to take my word though, Luke knew both of them and he clearly didn't push for Speights here...
He was playing for a moron that never played him enough to get in any groove especially with his idiot substitution patterns. Hopefully Luuke and this much better staff can start to fix that.
I'm not really sure the evidence is out there to support this claim, but I'd be more than happy to look at the numbers if they exist.
I'm not gona buy into these narratives that this coach wanted this guy and that guy...but black is not a good player. Speights has his warts but for a 1yr vet min, he'll earn more of that money than Black will for $3mill.
there were plenty of instances, even in garbage time he would lose his man in transition D, he never knew who to pickup on PnR screens which is typical of all bigs in general but more time then not when I did pay attention to him on D he seems to be floating around and not actually defending anyone until someone is already deep into the paint where they'll either get a dunk or he'll foul them. edit- also wanted to note, only reason Black is a C cause he has no offense at all, dude is the same sz as Randle (height wise)
The narrative? It's not a narrative if it's just openly true. Luke could have fought to bring in Speights on a minimum contract and instead chose Black. I mean I'm not even saying Black is a great player, but he's better than freaking Speights. Literally the only thing Speights can do better than Tarik is shoot. That's it. He's not as good a rebounder, he's weaker in the paint, he's not a better defender. I don't understand the desire to have Speights over Tarik. I understand maybe someone like Meyers Leonard who is multi-talented, but Speights?

Black best def rating was 105 playing 12 gms in Hou and his best reb avg was 6 also in limited games, Speights best def rating as a backup with gsw was 102-103 and avg. nearly 5rebs a game then as well....
that 7'3 C from the spurs just got 7mill from Det and he had some ridiculous per 36 #'s, you're telling me Black is worth 6mill?
