What's the math in stretching him? How long would he be on the books for?

Just seen at your post @abeer3

If all the deals available include offloading our first round pick to get rid of an expiring WB, I would consider stretching him if it meant preserving our 27 and 29 picks for future transactions.

I’m not stretching him. The thought of paying Russ to not be on the team for YEARS to come just after finally getting off of Deng’s money makes me ill. Maybe having Deng’s money on the books contributed to us losing Caruso, so hell no to that happening again.

If we don’t get lucky with taking a couple players back for him this summer, then he HAS to be John Walled. Stretching would absolutely destroy our chances of building a team worth watching.
Also, to Slick, WE TOLD YOU SO. Just admit you were wrong about Russ. You would gain some respect from several members who frequently post here.

Stretch? Good Lawdy no. That strategist is out of his mind, it's still a (approx) 15 million a year over 3 years, that's big. That's a big-time starting role player. You buy him out and suffer the year. Thing is, with Lebron winding down to his final year the FO is under immense pressure to do something this summer after fumbling the ball 2 seasons in a row.

If whomever is running this dumpster fire this summer would tell Russ he will be disconnected completely from the team and will play no more for the Lakers, if he opts in, maybe he won’t? His career could be over if he sits for an entire season.
I know, just let me dream!

LeGM created this mess. If he is still going to live in the delusion that it wasn’t HIS idea, he needs to go when his contract is up.

There has never been an exact proclamation for who was responsible for Russ. What is known is that there was a deal in the works for Buddy Hield and Russ came across the table. According to Rob, standard operating procedure is to get Lebron AND AD in on the decision-making process which obviously went for Russ. So it may be attributable to LBJ/AD/Rob and Rambis as well. And make no mistake, Jeanie and Linda were told about it before it went down as well so my guess is it was the whole household however the impetus and initial "I want him" may very well have come from Lebron's mouth.

If we stretch Russ I’ll lose it. I’d rather put up with him for another season than go down the Deng path again.

There is plenty of blame to be spread around because many did approve it. There were reports that some in the FO were completely against bringing in Russ. I would love to know who these people are.

It's true there's no facts available, but with some knowledge of how LeBron operates, Pelinka been looking to add shooters (Russ is the exact opposite) and the quick turnaround on the way we were building the squad, clearly hints that LeBron is the main responsible for this mess.

still think the fundamental assumption that russ gets ALL his cash in a buyout is in question. i mean, maybe he does. but kemba gave up cash to get out of a situation he didn't like, and he recovered most of it (almost certainly secured ahead of time). i don't see why russ can't explore that. we can help him! maybe klutch can steer a client somewhere if they promise to defray some of our russ cost by signing him!

Guys like Tim Harris, Jesse Buss, Irving Thomas, the same responsible for getting us good picks out the 2nd round. We have people that can smell a rotten fish but unfortunately, we no longer hold their opinions in value beyond the draft, it's about catering to the stars and making them feel smarter than they really are.

Is this the worst Laker trade of all time?

This assumes that someone will actually want him running their offense. From how far he’s fallen, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Yeah unfortunately it has been in terms of negative impact. Can’t think of any that rival this one.

The combo of Mozgov and Deng which happened simultaneously is at least equal. It was 2016 and we are feeling it's effects today.

136 million over 4 years to both of them (72 Deng, 64 Mozgov). We ended up paying a total of 64.5 on Deng's contract but it has affected our payroll from 2016 until this season. Neither player was worth more than vet mins. Both were finished.

Mozgov we paid 16,000,000 for the first year of his contract then traded a package of Mozgov + our fairly valuable 2015 2nd round draft pick D'Angelo Russell (in his 3rd year) to BRK for Brook Lopez and the No. 27 pick. We took in Brook's 22 million salary (expiring) which was way overpaying but he was a far more effective piece than Mozgov.

So the end product of those 2 signings was paying Deng 64.5 (the last 15 of which were painfully stretched making it 6 years to fully shed him) and 16 for Mozgov + whatever value you put on D'Angelo who was worth far more than his rookie contract and a possible future star at this point. Not to mention absorbing Brook Lopez's final year at 22 million. I would say Brook was worth about 8 mil at the time so figure it a 14 mil overpay.

So cold, hard, cash we paid 80.5 mil over 6 years technically though only 15 over the final 3 and we lost our 2nd draft pick 3rd year talent and we took in Brook Lopez's 22 million expiring contract and we got a 27th pick in that '16 draft.

Mind you these deals were in 2016 and we are feeling the effects of them still today with the final 5 million of Deng's stretch provision ending this season. Kupchak and Jimmy Buss were fired over these deals and general incompetence. If the Russ deal is worse then it follows we should see Rob's head unless it wasn't really his call.

Russ' deal was 2 years 91 mil and it ends next summer so he's expiring and we may do something with him yet. And he can actually play though seems to be more of a - than a + on this team.
