If Rose can stay healthy it's a good deal, but unless this is followed up by replacing their starting center and filling out the team with competent role players, they aren't going to be much better than last season. That's a big if for me, Rose isn't the same player anymore. I guess I shouldn't call it a terrible deal, just a head scratching one, lateral on both sides. Well, actually the Bulls probably get more value.
Yeah I mean I guess I'm looking it from a more macro value than what will just be on the court. It's a move that gets people talking and buzzing. But on the court, as long as Rose is healthy he'll make that team better. The only interesting wrinkle will be what kind of chemistry Rose and Anthony can develop, if any. Both of them need the ball a lot. Rose/____/Anthony/Porzingis/______ is a decent start though. I think they'll also have a bunch of money to spend too if I'm not mistaken. I'm guessing they now make big runs at Noah and Howard to shore up the defensive side.
Compared to Super Clown, Noah would fit in better with the Knicks as far as wanting touches and all that. He'd be a better passer too.
Brilliant move for Phil. Seriously. They weren't winning anything with what they had. IF Rose regains 75% of what he was then they are instantly better, and they have a product worth watching. If (really when) Rose gets injured again Phil has a built in excuse that at least he swung for the fences.
total steal for the knicks i know rose isn't what he once was but if all it takes to get him are the players NY gave up, you take that risk any day if they have the money i could see howard end up there
I think Knicks got a damn good deal. Risk/reward is in Phil's favor as @TIME said. He's not the Rose of yesteryear, but he's a big name and will immediately generate buzz. If he can get at least a part of his old game back, it's a steal. He has the size Phil likes for his guards (granted the last ball dominant guard failed in 04 in the triangle). Robin is a good player but they sold high after a great over-his-head season in the triangle. The rest...eh. Let's see who Phil gets to come play center. He's got some interesting options.
Best part of this trade for the Bulls is that it clears any question of who's team it is. Butler will be happy and performs much better without the ball sticking in Rose's hands.
good risk for ny. rose expires after this year, and calderon/lopez/grant are completely replaceable in FA. the bulls just needed to flush the rose era, and they got a starting c out of the deal, which is one more nba player than i expected they'd get in return for rose.
I just don't understand NYK's thinking on this? 1) Gave up way too much IMO. There was no market for Derrick Rose. The Bulls tried to trade him last year during the draft.... nothing good. THey reportedly tried to trade him a month or so ago and everything dried up. Robin Lopez is a very capable center. Not great at anything but solid two way Center on a nice contract considering the increase in salary coming. 2) Then you give up on Jerian Grant (1st Round Pick last year) that quietly Phil said he was impressed by him last year. 3) Lastly, you know if your the Knicks your going to have to pay Rose after next year when his contract is up. Barring any big injury that's a lot of money to have to keep him. And if you dont decide to keep him after 1 year. You just lost Lopez, and a 1st round pick (Jerian) for nothing. I was listening to Woj - The Vertical podcast today where he had a 25 min show dedicated to talking about this and he said others around the league are worried this could potentially take away from the development of Kristas Porzingus because Rose wants and needs the ball in his hands.
i don't think zinger needs the ball. in fact, he needs to be finishing plays at this point in his career, not starting them. rose/melo is the really odd fit. but again, they weren't exactly in a great spot with calderon and lopez. they have a good shot at upgrading center in FA, and the move preserves cap space (as opposed to simply absorbing rose). also maintains flexibility for next summer if rose continues his tailspin. i think it's a win/win.
First let me say this deal isn't "terrible" IMO. Grant was nothing special, Lopez neither and Calderon is an addition by subtraction. Not that Rose is the MVP of 2011, he has fallen sharply but he is still able to put solid numbers. The main issue with NY is that they have 3 all offense players with Melo, Rose and Porzingis and nobody who plays defense or is unselfish enough to fit in. But if they can land a Dwight Howard probably...they are atleast an interesting team to watch which is still much better than what they were before.
