there's a lot of hullabaloo about bad defense, but those shots weren't the result of bad defense, imo. the scoring barrages now are more about philosophy than a decline in defense. players didn't used to be allowed (by their own teams) to take the volume of threes we have now, and teams used to set up defenses from the inside out because guys couldn't/didn't shoot from deep as much. so now if you're someone who can both hit contested threes AND finish in the paint, you can put up some huge numbers, particularly with so many teams eschewing rim protectors for mobility. luka just got to spots in the lane against pseudo centers and put it around or over them, and the reason he had all day is because people had to stay home on shooters all over the floor (because he's such a good passer). scheme or effort was unlikely to save atlanta last night. the only thing that could save them was not trading luka when they had him at the 3rd overall pick. also, as a lakers fan: preserve assets! dallas isn't going anywhere, imo. but luka will be. we need to get him.
i don't like how much of it occurs off iso sets. that makes it boring, despite the scoring. still think the three point line just needs to be further out. when it was introduced, no one foresaw that all five guys would be taking that shot and what that would mean for defense or the flow of the game.
I think like Lebron, our best chance with Luka will be if he gets to free agency. If only Luka came to the league one year earlier... Magic would've been hypnotized and said something like we got the new white version of me!
