Just guessing here but will go with "a whole bunch of us". We all liked/loved the kids and especially with the pain it took over the years since the Dwight, Nash, Kobe disaster year. Plus the freakishly good luck to get/keep those picks year after year. That decision at the time made sense and will always make sense for when it was made to get a true 2 way superstar BIG not even in his prime yet here in P&G. If he were to bail on us at the end of the year is the ONLY way with hindsight it would have been the wrong decision. The chances of that 99.9% of the NBA universe think are nil.
What's the strategy behind not verbally committing? I agree with you that the odds would be high that he will sign... but I'd feel it was more like 99.9% if he said he was... and even then there's always some small level of doubt.
I dunno .... maybe being consistent with what he has said from day one after letting NO know he would not sign again after this year? He would test FA wherever he was traded. Even if he knows he's not going anywhere else?
I think he's an honest guy... and wouldn't want to make a promise he couldn't keep. I agree the odds seem very high he would stay... but all it would take is a rift with LBJ or an injury. So maybe the odds are 95% but I doubt 99.9%
If you queried all the players in the league and all the people working in the league and writing about the league world wide that's a LOT of people and I bet 99.9% is closer than 95% would answer they expect him to stay. Yes. I saw him grab a defenders arm while driving to the basket multiple times in the 4th quarter alone. Not basketball. That is cheating. He deserved to lose.
Michael Jordan was the greatest player in the history of the game, and he'd be the first to tell you, if you're not cheating, you aren't really trying. No one ever argued that Michael Jordan didn't try. Jordan was arguably the best ever at the "invisible foul." He knew how to foul while using his body to shield the foul from the refs. I wouldn't be surprised if he got away with 10 fouls for every one that he actually got called for. Kobe Bryant has taken everything he learned by emulating Michael Jordan into playing dirty without getting called. He has every bit of the savvy that Jordan had when it comes to getting away with fouls. He's also added to that another wrinkle on the other end of the table. For years he got away with jabbing players with his elbows on his jumper. He's also chronically slapping opponents on his follow through. I didn't say Harden is as good as Jordan or Kobe. The guy said he was a hack because he cheated. So I sourced two different references to remind people that even the greats cheat. And I don't like the cheating! I simply think he's a good player.
