If the Lakers accepted his team offer for 2015, then he would relinquish his no-trade clause.

Basically, he get's his guaranteed $9M for the next year.

Only thing that could hurt them is that monta is going to have to play off the ball. Something he's never shown he can do

I'm actually glad that we wont get him now, but it sure would have been nice to keep Him in the East.

Yeah on paper it looks like a pretty devastating starting lineup. But, Rondo and Ellis both need the ball to be effective. We'll see how it plays out.

This is a good test of one of the reasons people didn't want Rondo with Kobe. Ellis has shown a history of not working well off the ball or at least not working at his best. Not to mention Rondo is a sourpuss to work with so we'll see how this all works.

Now that my brief depression has passed, maybe this situation will be more like Nash/Howard than Garnett/Allen.

Rondo & Dirk will work better than Rondo & Kobe. Ellis is now #3. He will just have to adjust.

watched tonight's game...thinks about the comments above...

I think people underrate rondo's ability to play with different players in different schemes. same with ellis. not being able to play with Brandon Jennings is an issue for most people.

Dallas's concern is a weaker bench and a lack of consistent three point shooting. I don't think the rondo/ellis tandem will have problems figuring out how to play together at all. nor would rondo and kobe, for that matter.

Ellis has shown ability to play off the ball when he scored 20 ppg on 53.1 FG%. Since then, he hasn't really been playing off the ball though. He's capable. He just hasn't done it so we'll see how this works out. It's not really Ellis' ability to play off the ball that's in question for me. It's how Rondo will fit into a team that was the #1 offensive team in the NBA. Can they maintain that? How much of a boost can Rondo provide defensively?

the offense may take a slight step back (though you'd be putting a lot of stock in the "contributions" of jameer nelson), but the d should improve with time. rondo will allow the mavs to use zone more, too, which is how they've been respectable on d in the past. in man schemes, teams just feast on dirk.

    The Rondo Effect

Rondo was traded for Wright, Nelson, and Crowder. Normally, people would see this as a huge win for the Mavericks in terms of "win-now", but is it really?

Dallas Mavericks' offensive rating before getting Rondo.

    First 9 games: 116.2 ORtg
    Second 9 games: 117.3 ORtg
    Last 9 games: 117.0 ORtg

As you can see, they were consistently an elite offensive team. Those numbers are actually absurdly good and yes, they had the best offense in the league prior to the trade. After getting Rondo, they matched that number in only 3 out of their 14 games.

Since Rondo got there: 107.4 ORtg

They went from the best offensive team in the league to barely above average.

In their last 6 games, Rondo had a really good shooting game against the Kings. In the other 5 games...

    8/43 shooting
    18.6 FG%

That is 43 attempts for 16 points.

Edit: Their team-wide assists are virtually the same (actually slightly down), but their turnovers have gone up a lot.

    Good point.

Rondo actually recently came out and said that he hasn't played defense in several years but that Carlisle expects all of his players to play solid defense. I think he also stated that the trade to the Mavs sort of "rejuvenated" him. As a result, he's been doing better on that end.

How much did the defense improve by?

    Defensive Rating before Rondo: 109.0
    Defensive Rating after Rondo: 104.0

That's a big improvement. It's still not quite enough to offset the dropoff in offense, but it's a big improvement. Mavs just need to find ways to "fit" Rondo on offense.

Anyway, I'd say Rondo is returning back to his all-defensive first team form in terms of defense. It probably also helps him a ton to have someone like Tyson behind him (similar to KG).

I think their offense will rebound a bit after they all get acclimated. rondo's a big piece to add midseason. changes the way they play a bit.

defensively, you can already see the impact. I'm guessing they're not regretting moving backups and protected 1sts for him.

sort of unfair for boston to ask for randle from la and wright and two protected 1sts from the mavs. no way i'd give randle, but any other player and two protected picks...i'd have done it.

Rebuild... or screw himself even more. Contract year players are tricky.
