Like @Paperplanes said, this is post Aug 31st deadline so the cap hit would be prorated on whatever they agree to the buyout of 18m for the 2018/19 season and then it would be 3 yrs of dead cap on the prorated amount of 18.8m for the 2019/20, 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons. So Deng finally comes off the books In the summer of '22 but at the most his dead cap hit would have been 6.3m next year and for the 2 following years. Now I expect that amount to be more between 4-5m in dead cap space.

This is more for giving Deng an opportunity to play than to save us money since we weren't in a tax penalty. Let's say he took 30m of his 36.8m. He would count for roughly 15m on our books this coming year and then count as about 5m in dead cap for the next 3 seasons.

We would have 40m+ in cap space next summer and a max free agent like Kawhi/Butler would count as a 33m cap hit.

The reason we did this now and not next summer is we actually did Deng a solid in making him a free agent this year to reap back his buyout losses and he also did Jeanie a solid in giving us a projected savings this year if the buyout is significant.

This screams more of a player relations move than potential cap savings for next year. I still would have personally liked to hold onto him to move him in a trade but maybe we didn't want to trade any assets in a Deng dump.

The Jim Buss Era is officially over. Lakers have 40 million to spend next summer, I am very happy this morning. Let's win a title this year and then sign Kawhi and get past the C Bags with number 18 please.

Love your breakdowns. Makes it easy to understand (although all the cap stuff still confuses me).

So today is finally the day we get rid of Deng. Thank God that chapter is over. Hopefully he at least gave back a little of that money he’s getting that he doesn’t deserve.

Thanks bro! Still trying to learn all the intricacies of the CBA. I love talking it cause it helps me learn it with the members here.

Real posted above that it would be 5-10m in a buyout which means at best it would be 4.6m on our books from '19/20 - '21/22.

Also Deng has the option of either double dipping or giving us even more of a savings if/when he signs with another team (ie set-off).

Anyone know if he can give up that money on JUST the final year of the contract? I would think he could since this season has already "started" in a way. If it ends up being 7 million off just the last year, 11 million stretched over 3 isnt bad at all.

You actually can the same way that Ryan Anderson agreed to change up his final year guaranteed salary for the Suns trade. But it would have to be completely up to Deng in how he chooses to be paid out.

I think we were ready to wait out the year for stretch next season or as salary filler in a trade but I think Deng really, REALLY, wanted to play and we bought him out so he can. Now lets see if a team actually picks him up or will he be going to Africa to continue his work there.

Dead money isn't really that big of a deal. The most important year to open up room was next offseason to get a max slot and we did that. Beyond that we are going to be capped out and/or paying the young guys (Starting with Ingram).

Wish he gave up more money but at least it’s some. Hopefully some team picks him up and he agreed to refund us that amount also.
