Most NBA contracts are incentive based now. I'm not trying to completely deflect from Deng, but if you're going to throw that type of money around for a 31 year old (at the time), then have some if it incentive driven. Nope...not old school Mitch...instead he gave a fully guaranteed bag.

I was so ecstatic when we got him; go back to the beginning of the page, and you'll see. I didn't know the ramifications it would have on our salary cap space at the time. We were starving for talent and I was supporting anybody we signed that seemingly came as an upgrade to improve our team.

Yes, I was wrong. Absolutely. Now, we are stuck with this contract, and we might have to stretch him next summer. Kupchack was very good at a lot of things; one of them wasn't giving out dollars and money to a player; he was horrible at it.

I 'm guessing we just have to eat it.

Everyone knew getting rid of Deng was not going to be easy. I’m at least happy we are not willing to give away talent to pay for our mistake. Sometimes you just have to pay up, no matter how undeserving the player is.

I keep wondering if Brooklyn would have taken Deng instead of Mozgov if we packaged Nance or Zubac along with DLO?

I'm glad it was Mozgov that was included in the deal and not Deng. At least Deng keeps quiet whereas Mozgov you could tell was getting irraitated by not playing as much and those Moz interviews were like nails on a chalk board. So awkward and uncomfortable.

Yeah, but Mozgov at least had SOME utility. Deng is paperweight at this point.

I honestly am starting to think we stretch him and only get PG-13 as a deluxe upgrade over KCP. We probably sign a center to a 5-6 million dollar contract and resign Julius as our "Odom" and keep Clarkson. It wouldn't make that upset and we'd still have lots of room to grow. Just having a guy like George to help smooth out our "end-game" situations would be huge.

I just don't see a situation where George comes on board without help. I would be okay with that possibility, but I don't see it happening. Not to mention, as soon as George signs, LeBron or Boogie is likely to perk up and the Lakers are likely to bend over backwards to make it work.

So is there ANY news of him even being around the team, cause you know, at least provide some vet leadership and earn some of that huge paycheck. Or did we just tell him to stay home.

I've wondered the same thing, but if they outlawed twinkies and ding dongs in the locker room, we probably have our answer

This is true, but whether Moz or Deng was included in the deal Lopez was coming back to us and Moz was not going to play in front of Lopez. Also, with the way Luke likes to go small a lot if not most of the time with our bench unit Moz would never see the floor and IMO just wouldn't go away silently.

In either case, the question is which contract would be easier to shed right now. As it stands Deng is impossible to move. What if we had Mozgov?

at least we'd be entertained by the falling down thing

    or was that Hibbert?

we've had too many scrub centers who can't rebound to save their lives - it's all starting to run together

I’m a little confused, I understand the cap implications in stretching and waiving his contract, but why can’t both sides agree to a buyout? How does that affect the cap going forward?

This. He has very little motivation to leave unless he so desperately wants playing time or wants out of Los Angeles that he is willing to accept less than his contract amount.
