that's all fine. my question is why is this something that, say, is supposed to reduce a team's likelihood of matching an RFA offer?

like washington was like, i'll pay otto porter 126 million, but there's NO FREAKING WAY he's getting half his first year's salary before October 15th!! you think i'm a sucka?!!

I think the advance might have more to do with the player not being savvy with their money. If Pope really thought he was going to get at least a 4 year- 80 million dollar contract, he may have made purchases/financial decisions based those numbers. Now he could be in the hole and needs a cash advance to catch up.

It's hard to say without knowing the figures of any team per say. But like in any business, you'd always rather pay your expenses as late as possible to give yourself the most amount of cash flow over a period.

So the 50% advance is favourable to the player. However I don't really think it's very important in this circumstance... it doesn't change the value of the contract only the time of pay out.

I remember reading back in the day that Kobe use to recieve his money in a lump sum - I can't remember if it was at the beginning or end of a season, but he preferred it that way and would invest it all in one go.

This signing made perfect sense but the Lakers got very lucky

    a) that KCP became available
    b) that no other team offered him a longtern contract

But he is a solid (average) SG who plays solid defense. His shot has a lot of room to improve so don't expect him shooting 40% on threes. If he could play D AND shoot 40% from three...he would get a max deal from a crazy GM.

The Lonzo effect will change that, in UCLA he made average players look like stars and now in summer league he's making the likes of Wear, Blue, Thomas look like automatic 3 point shooting studs. Imagine what he'll do with kcp, Brook and even jc

Thank god 3 of our starters are in their contract year which means you can expect them to show up more often than not.

I don't believe anything works on zombies. Reasoning, hypnosis, constructive criticism...none.

Thomas was billed as a shooter and Wear is a stretch big in the G-League. Blue, as far as I can remember, isn't known as an outside threat really so that's the Lonzo sticking point there. Blue feels the confidence to pull up early and drill it where in the first two games he wasn't shooting at all.

Caldwell-Pope is a pretty good shooter, but he's streaky. I'd say he's not too dissimilar from what Russell did for us: could get really hot, but if he doesn't strike early then it's no guarantee he strikes at all. He shot 90/226 (39.8%) from deep from November to January, but he was 63/211 (29.9%) the rest of the year.
