Byron Play 1 through 301: Pass the ball around the perimeter for 20 second then whoever has the ball in their hands take a contested mid range or 3pt shot.
He's going through a slump right now. I still believe in him. He needs to continue rebounding and contributing in other areas until he figures out the offense
Heh heh, the "offense", as if we have one. I'd rather he didn't learn the "offense" so he doesn't have to unlearn it next season, and work on his individual game. He does have a long way to go, needs that jumper, needs a right hand, but he's a rookie. Rookies start hitting that wall right around now, having only played a 30 game or so college season. So if we see some slumps from he and Russ anytime soon, no big deal.
i'll play the devil's advocate. larry does all the things Julius doesn't: plays within the team concept on both ends, moves the ball quickly when he doesn't have an advantage, attacks quickly when he does, keeps aware on d, knocks down wide open midrange looks. he just can't do some of the things randle can. but those things aren't useful in terms of winning unless you do the nance stuff. maybe watching nance do it will motivate randle to emulate. also, I have liked nance since I first saw him play (post-college). him starting is still developing a young player. I bet if Julius played a little more like nance in terms of the above, he'd have his starting position back.
Nance has a role with this team going forward. How large it is is largely up to him, the amount of work he puts in. He has a great skill set, very versatile.
Nance will put in the work...he does not have that entitled mentality. He and Clarkson are alike. Nothing is handed to both so they go get it. Nance and Randle are a good pair of forwards to develop.
I 100% understand all of that. But Julius does not seem like the kid who will respond to this type of teaching. In fact he's clearly NOT responding to this kind of teaching because he's not changing. Julius is making a lot of the same mistakes and as a teacher you can either accept that as your fault and change your style or blame the kid. Byron is clearly not taking responsibility for failing to teach Julius or D'Angelo whatever lesson he's trying to impart.
Totally agree. A great teacher understands what individuals need and tailors the instruction for each individual instead of applying one method universally. Sadly, I don't think Julius will tap his tremendous potential and make great strides until the offseason when Byron is gone and the Lakers hire another coach. I know I'll get flamed for this but I really wanted Larry Brown after the Lakers fired D'Antoni. Brown would be a great teacher for these youngsters. If Brown were the coach right now, this team would be playing far better.
Used to be a huge Larry Brown fan. I think the game has passed him by a bit now. Maybe it's the changing culture. Not sure. Something seemed different about him in the past few years.
Brown seems more relateable for sure even if he still had that hard nosed mentality. Player seemed to buy in more. Something did seem off the last few years though. Isn't he coaching at a small-ish college somewhere? Small relative to a big name I mean.
Very passionate teacher of the game. He even made the Clippers respectable for a couple seasons. He's definitely gotten up there in age, but he'll always be respected.
Brown has recruited extremely well and has turned that team around. SMU were perennial losers. They currently are undefeated and ranked 17th in the country. He still is a great coach in teaching the youngsters fundamentals. Julius (as well as the other youngsters on the roster) needs a coach similar to Brown, i.e, someone who can teach him and can relate. I really believe if a coach is a great communicator it doesn't matter how old the coach is that person will be able to get the most out of a player. Can you imagine Brown coaching Russell? That would be unbelievable. Byron really is a limited coach. However, he probably would do well with a veteran-laden team.
I love Larry Brown. Great freaking coach. One of the absolute best in the biz. He is getting up there in years and as we know he can be a bit nomadic. But I'm a big fan. I don't see us going that route though, but I wouldn't mind one bit.
My issue with Larry Brown (my opinion, from every stop he's made) is that he comes in and wants to change everything, starting with the roster. He wants full control. His players like him at the start, but everywhere he goes they eventually get sick of him after a few years. He rebuilds a team and he gets bored and moves on/the team fires him because there are always issues with him and front offices. He is very good at coaching and making teams respectable again, but I wouldn't want him, we need to go younger and think long-term.
Outrageous first half from Julius. Kind of met his match when they put Crowder on him though. He made it tough for him to score in the post and Randle couldn't beast on him like he did the other defenders. But obviously great boards again and another solid double double. Give him the minutes and he does that over and over again.
Crowder is a tough defender. I missed the 4th period, so I didn't see exactly what transpired. Oftentimes, Julius gets where he wants which is a very good sign, but he has struggled finishing at times.
He may not be playing, but he's still proving to be a valuable signing helping balance out B0ron's negative influence.
