Early in this video, Max (foolishly) suggests that Randle has no trade value.

Stephen A Smith suggests Max is wrong from an opinionated standpoint, but also implies that from an insider standpoint he has direct knowledge confirming that Randle has good trade value.

    I wonder what that means.

@Helljumper To piggy back onto what Real said, Jules is considered a free agent, so a S&T would imply that Jules and his representation would have to touch base with another team (in this scenario, the Spurs). That would definitely be considered tampering.

So LA technically can layout a trade scenario on our part and get in touch with Jules/Mintz about it, but we can't relay Jules to another team till June 30th 9:00pm pt at the earliest.

That being said, there is a way to circumvent this since Kawhi is under contract and so are our kids. We can get on the phone with the Spurs and construct a deal under the guise of using other players under contract but still bringing Jules's name into those discussions. However, if discuss contract details, then again that would be tampering and here's to hoping the league looks the other way haha.

if Randle were to do this and we max out PG and Lebron, what does that mean for his contract situation as it pertains to our salary cap next year?

Funny you ask this, I was wondering the same thing. Tweeted this to Reed, so hopefully he answers this.

We'd be over the cap, but we'd have his Bird Rights still. He'd be an Unrestricted Free Agent and thus able to sign anywhere, but we'd be able to offer him the most money.

I'm curious about this as well. If we max out PG and LBJ, how much would Randle be making (if we keep him) if we stretch out Deng. Does this mean we have no money left for next year FA?

Jules's QO is 5.6M and that would be on the books as opposed to the 12.4M cap hold that's in place while he decides as a restricted free agent. Accepting the QO effectively makes him an expiring contract worth 5.6M that enables him to be an UFA next summer.

That however, would get in the way of Kawhi's free agency if the Spurs refused to trade him to us and it got to that point.

Best case scenario for Jules to be added to the star lineup, would be for Jules to accept the QO, Bron and PG to come on board with the available cap space. Then the Spurs trade with us that doesn't involve Jules. Then next summer we use Kawhi and Jules's bird rights to bypass the salary cap and we secure a PG, Bron, Kawhi, Jules teamup.

He'd play the year out on a 5.8 million dollar contract then look for a big payday next summer. There's an outside chance we coule have some money, but not much.

There's little reason for Julius to do this though unless he loves being here that much and wants to play with those guys so much he'd give up 60 million dollars or more. With a young kid? I doubt it. If I'm him I take the best offer this summer.

getting pg n james this off season would prevent us from signing leonard anyway even if deng is traded for nothing

Man, I'd love this route, option!

I know Randle likely won't go this route but by doing so even if he doesn't want to stay with the Lakers after next year he'd have a lot more team with cap space or could sign back with us.

I really can’t see Randle doing that, he has earned a nice payday. And if he did do that and we didn’t get LeBron and/or PG, he’d have screwed himself for a season. Of course I’d love it if he did do that, but I really see no benefit in it for him unless he has spoken to LeBron and PG, gets verbal confirmation that they are signing, gets a verbal agreement that we pay him big money next season, and he REALLY likes it here and wants to win in LA.

I'd have to check, but I'm not sure what teams are likely to have a lot of cap space next summer. Brooklyn is supposed to be one of them.

I don't know either but that was my assumption given how little teams have cap space this year

Not if you trade for him and use his bird rights next summer. That's why I said it would get in the way of us signing Kawhi next summer if the Spurs didn't trade him to us.

Cap next summer is set to 108M. Lets assume Bron and PG sign max 1+1's this summer then they'll be on the books for close to 69M (37 + 32) next summer in cap holds. Zo, BI, Kuz, Hart and Moe all account for roughly 21M next summer. So with Deng and Jules off the books, you're looking at 90m in team salary and capholds next summer and 18M in cap space.

Lets say Bron and PG are down to take a haircut next summer to bring Kawhi on board as a free agent, those dudes would have to split roughly 86M among them when their true maxes for each are about 101M (37 + 32 + 32)...meaning they each would have to shave roughly 5M off each of their respective maxes to play with each other next summer.

This is why trading for Kawhi while using Jules to dump Deng is the best option imho.

There's too much risk for Ju to just take the QO.

He could easily get a $12-16M - multi year offer from a team elsewhere. If he takes the QO and gets hurt, he could hurt his value and not make nearly as much.

Too risky for him. As an athlete, you never know when you’ll have a freak injury like a broken leg.

sure in that instances randle is gone anyways so im not sure why you have a comment bout resigning randle would prevent us from signing leonard. if we had all 3 (pg,leonard ,james) now, theres nothing i could think of that would fit randle in except for him signing min deal lol

Resigning Jules would prevent us from signing Kawhi as a free agent. I only made the comment cause I saw fans wondering if Jules would take the QO in an attempt to create a super team. And if the super team involves Kawhi, you can't do anything with Jules, unless you trade for Kawhi. Bringing in Kawhi as a free agent is a no go if the object is to pair him with Jules and a max player.

You throw money at him this summer and bring in at least 1 max guy, then both their contracts prevent us from bringing in Kawhi as a max free agent next summer.

You throw the QO at him and pray he signs it so that we can also max out 2 stars, hoping to pay Jules on the back end next summer, but obviously that prevents us from getting Kawhi as the other max cause who does that money go to during next summer's free agency? If we dump deng and all we have is Bron and the kids then we'll have roughly 60M in team payroll with 48M in cap space. If Kawhi's max next summer is about 32M, then where's the money for Jules after we told him to sacrifice this year with a QO? You think 16M gets it done?

If PG seriously chooses OKC and fans want Jules to join a superteam, its best to get trades going instead of hoping Jules sacrifices his bag with a QO this year to get paid next summer.

all true. but if the market dries up...

say all the cap space teams pass on randle--do you take a multi-year MLE deal or the QO with a wink-wink from captain wink-wink himself?

greater long-term benefit in retaining bird rights with the lakers at lower pay in year one.

it's unlikely everybody passes on a talent of his caliber, but stranger things have happened.

and yes, broken legs and such...
