I read something on Facebook about Jordan planning on accepting the one-year qualifying offer and becoming unrestricted next summer. Can anyone get confirmation on this? Sounds great. Free up more cap to do after Durant and Whiteside, and then Jordan can go make bank next offseason when we replace him with Westbrook.
Doing that would mean he'd be able to get out of here without the Lakers being able to match salaries to get him to stay. Of course, we'd have his Bird Rights, but still.
what's his max again? iirc, I think you just sign him to it. even if he's a sixth man going forward, he should be worth that kind of cash. also, why risk losing an asset. the FO conjured a rotation player out of nothing--they bought a mid 2nd round pick. I'd overpay to keep at this point. even if it cut into this summer's cap space, which is overrated given the roster makeup and general team trajectory.
His max is 25% of the salary cap. If the salary cap rises above 100 million for the 2017-2018 season, it's understandable why he'd want to wait an extra season before signing his first long term deal.
I recall reading somewhere that his max from others is 4/57 or something like that. His max from us (25% of 92) starts at 23 million. Next summer his max would start at 26.75 million or so.
sorry, I meant his max for others. if he's holding out for the real max, he's going to be disappointed.
Okay after a little digging: Clarkson falls under the "Arenas Provision" which is the same deal that happened recently with Lin and with Parsons. This summer other teams can only offer him a starting max salary of the mid-level exception, but in year three that salary can jump to 23 million. He can sign a deal with another team worth roughly 3/34 million or maybe even 4/57 million. Our max offer to him starts at about 20.8 million or so and could go for about 4/88.9 million.
Laughable, good as he's coming around to be on just 1 side of the ball so far that new salary cap puts him into the neighborhood of money Kobe got 3 years ago. At least Bryant had the rings, body of work and was a cash cow internationally for the team.
We really need to see how the market shakes out with this new super salary cap to know if those numbers are really out of the question any more for a player of Clarkson's calibur. I do however balk at paying that amount to a one way player.
Clarkson is NOT worth the max. In no way shape or form. He is a good (not great) scorer, and he plays ZERO defense. If we pay him the full max, we are doomed because it shows we have zero faith in our ability to attract anyone from the outside. That being said, I don't think we will need to give him the max because I don't think other teams will offer it to him (even their max which is less then ours). Fans always tend to overrate their own players, especially young ones. Lou Williams got 3/21. Not sure if he's viewed much different than Lou around the league. A combo guard that can score a bit and plays no defense. I'd offer 4/40. If he wants more, let him test the market. Just because he's been one of our lone bright spots, doesn't mean we should commit to him in a way where he is our sg of the future when he hasn't shown any improvement (he's actually regressed in my opinion) on one end of the ball. Since he's a second rounder, we are being asked to make a decision on a year and a half of work. First rounders give you 4 seasons to look at before you have to commit that kind of cash. I think some team will offer him 3/30. We can just match it, then trade Lou. Get Derozen in here to start at sg. Try to flip our pick (if we keep it) for another star like Cousins and hope that's enough for Durant.
he's worth something in the ballpark of the max someone else can offer him, imo (15 per). hard to imagine, but that's new cba stuff. you're talking 90-100 million dollar cap. it's like an 8 per deal a couple years ago. I'd tell his agent to go get that offer and we'll match it. if not, I'd have a counter offer (closer to 10-12 per, which is probably most appropriate) or the QO on the table.
I think 15 is obviously at the upper limit of what I'd be willing to consider. the more I think about it, the more the QO seems likely. the only thing preventing it in my mind is that he hasn't had a big payday yet, and as a second round pick, he's a big injury away from never getting one. in that case, it could make sense to take a lower dollar deal, just for the guarantee. maybe a two to three year deal at 12 per? of course, that goes out the window if someone else tries to max him out on an RFA offer. I just don't see that as likely.
I don't see another team maxing him out. He's solid, but he's not THAT young. He's what 24? Plays no defense at all. I've been saying it for a while now, he's the third guard in a really solid 3-guard rotation. But if he's your starting sg, you better have all stars at 3 other positions on the floor.
He's 24, but he's basically only seen the floor for 1 1/2 seasons. He still can become a much better defender.
he can improve on d, but you usually see more than he's shown by this point. in fact, it's pretty rare to go from no d to even above average d. I expect marginal improvement at best there. same for randle, actually. all that said, he can really play on the offensive end, and every team needs at least a couple guys who can put the ball on the floor and create offense. and despite what some of the stat nerdz suggest, they don't grow on trees.
