Where is this coming from? He hasn’t seemed at all to have helped the Lakers shooting unless AC and KCP have benefitted behind the scenes from working with him. Has anyone “ever” read anything about him in a coaching light?
wonder what the hollins story is. not sure what penberthy's done to deserve promotion. whatever. assistants.
Read his contract was up. We didn't renew (guess we can only staff one former Memphis coach at a time). He's not opposed to another gig somewhere if it's the right fit. I wonder how many voice-mails the Clippers have already left him. Edit: found some more info from The Athletic So... we weren't clear on his role after bringing in Fizdale. But fought off Kidd and Cuban to keep Penberthy. But the only way to keep AD'S guy was to promote him.
What a non vote of confidence for a guy who won a championship his first year in a difficult season like no other, and it was no fault of his last year with all the injuries and Dennis's shenanigans. The guy is so good at fostering chemistry on his teams too. Well he doesn't stress about s*** he can't control and will just have to go out and win it this year. Personally I don't get it.
for us to maintain our defensive poise and ranking with AD and LeBron missing all those games should have been plenty proof of Frank's acumen...and yea, that title thingy too from 10 months ago
As much as I like Vogel, and I do, I think they should see how he does with this team and really, with Lebron reaching the end of his career, I would not extend Vogel beyond a couple of years anyhow. I am betting when Lebron retires, Vogel is going to hit some hard times. He is NOT going to have the same rock to rely on. AD will be great if he can remain uninjured but my guess is that this is not going to happen for a long enough period of time for him to save the demise of this franchise after Lebron is gone. Hope I am wrong, and certainly we could luck out and get a replacement that is a perfect replacement, ...... cough cough ...... Doncic ...... cough cough. I would wait if I was the Lakers FO.
He wasn't their first choice respectfully in the beginning either. What he brings to the table a lot of coaches aren't able to in terms of understanding the players and getting along with everyone. That's a huge quality let alone his defensive schemes. I honestly don't know what's the right decision here but if anyone in the league could handle not getting a long term extension and still do his job to the fullest I believe it's Vogel.
I think we should ink him to an extension yesterday. If he gets this group to buy in defensively, he should get a lifetime contract. BUT we haven't extended a coach since Phil, it's just not something we do. It might have a little to do with the fact we've had some of the worst coaches in the league between Phil and Vogel.
