This was Woj's latest before game 4

Irwin also said there was some belief within the organization that if Ham got swept, come Sunday we would've woken up to the announcement of Ham's firing.

i'm not sure we haven't shown the willingness to pay. is this all about lue, still? we didn't want to pay lue more than other head coaches because lue hadn't (still hasn't, imo) proven he's worth it. biggest payroll in basketball, multiple all stars, meh results.

i actually think we would pay if there were a coach on the market worth it. what we're bad at is finding new coaching talent. for example, daigneault was brought up through okc's g league system. mosely was a player development coach for the mavs and cavs before doing well in orlando.

now, in fairness, part of it is that we're the lakers, and right now we employ lebron. that's a tough, not very desirable coaching gig, imo.

in retrospect, should we have paid lue? maybe. not sure much would be different, though. he'd have won a title, we'd have traded for westbrook, and he'd probably have been fired for westbrook's sins.

tl;dr: our decision not to pay lue wasn't because we were being cheap, imo. it was because vogel was a similar candidate willing to work for less and play ball with our weird management.

and that's another major barrier to attracting top-tier coaches. you got rambis down in your office and rambis hiring your assistants, etc.

but it's not the money, imo. the roster decisions have been about being cheap, though, for sure.

I think Ham's relationship with the players has deteriorated to the point where they can't bring him back, even if they win another game or two or somehow become the first team to come back from 3-0.

If we come back to win the series I’ll be willing to give Ham some credit. But otherwise please get rid of this guy.

And here's my thing, if the team's having those discussions about firing him if we lost Saturday, then we're at the point we were at with Vogel and the Utah (?) game where he was coaching for his life. If you're at that point, then it's over and anything short of a 'ship this year should be the end of that marriage.

I think it's a few things: 1) Lue. 2) the huge pay spike for HCs vs we're an understaffed mom and pop shop. 3) a couple of the beat guys and insiders have said that Jeanie doesn't like paying for people they've fired (paying someone not to do a job).

Yeah, unfortunately our scouting department's expertise ends with player evaluation. With how we churn through (bad) coaches, maybe we should add a scout who knows a thing or two about coach evaluation.

I think we should've. And I don't think he gets canned for Russ. Bron had a little more sway then and while someone would've fallen on he sword, I don't think Bron would've let it be his guy. Any parties Bron throws to this day Lue is in attendance if the Clipps aren't busy. That actually would've been interesting to see that spin play out. Only option at that point would've been Rambis. Sorry Jeanie.

Hasn't been yet, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about Jeanie's willingness to open the purse up for one of these record settings deals. And who's that for based on this market? Maybe Lue? Bud?

who goes down for russ if not lue in that situation? rob? that would be rich.

i don't know, man. a head had to roll for russ. that head should have been russ's but couldn't be. wasn't going to be lebron or AD.

also, if lue's such a good pal with lebron, why didn't he just accept our offer the first time? had he won the ring, he might have gotten a huge extension with lebron's urging/blessing.

Maybe in that scenario shuffling appeases the blood lust. Maybe shifting Kurt to more of a paper pushing or ambassador role, bringing in another voice in form of GM or assistant GM and adding another assistant coach picked by the FO prevents any of the primary figures from having to take the hit. They all say "oops" publicly and realize they had blind spots and to address them they went out and hired xy&z.

Coaches are a proud group. He felt he earned the long term deal and was offended we saw him as a stop gap coach considering his success in Cleveland. I don't think he would've gotten a huge extension because we haven't wanted to lock up a coach or style that surpasses Bron's tenure (Ham would still be in a moldable clay state post-Bron) and we're at Father Time's mercy there. I don't think the front office thought he'd still be around and that's fair, we've never seen this and probably will never see it again.

He needs to be fired tomorrow. Not firing him mid-season probably cost us a higher seed, not firing him this offseason will cost us another season. One of the worst coaches I’ve ever seen, even the most basic of coaches know when to take a timeout when their players are exhausted and momentum has swung to the other team. Ham just stands there laughing, hands in pockets. I guess I’d laugh too if I were stealing money and not having to actually do my job.

He used NONE of our timeouts when we needed them, then used them ALL in a quick burst, leaving us with none to take a last shot. MORON.
