Also why is Russell sitting prolonged minutes on the bench in the fourth? Still in both their corners however...
Took him longer to come around and warm up to the idea that Mozgov and Deng are trash but seems like reality has sunk.
I, as some of you know, am in software development, in an advanced technical position. One of my responsibilities is to evaluate candidate developers... mostly for senior positions.Usually I can tell within 10 - 15 minutes of free-flowing discussion whether the person knows what he/she talks about. Especially when he or she doesn't. I am absolutely positive that Luke, who is at the very top of his profession's position list and is highly regarded, knows how to evaluate talent. So does Phil (despite what we may have thought) and nearly every other head coach. They see these guys every day, all day. If, for some reason, someone plays when clearly inferior, there then must be a hidden reason: 1. ego management 2. in-FO politics 3. personal affiliations 4. minutes/lineups management So... I don't think Luke suddenly realized that Deng/Mozgov suck. It's just that now the above 4 power vectors changed and the resulting direction points toward a different player. For less mathematically inclined, this is what vector addition looks like: EDIT: Even better image... (can you tell I am a little bored?)
I'm going with we are out of the playoff picture, so it's time to develop younger talent. I also think there was a certain amount of respect and time given to veterans to round into form and to earn their big paychecks. Nobody likes to have big money sitting on the bench.
Not only the respect given to the veterans but Ingram and Zu are both 19 year old NBA rookies, not just young guys. They had to prove they could play at this level. They have and are being rewarded for it. I would still start Tarik over Zu - just give Moz's minutes to Zu for the rest of the season basically.
Will we see an undersized Black go up against huge Drummond tomorrow, or will Luke go back to Mozgov for match-up purposes. There's also the possibility of Zubac starting but Drummond would probably beat him up and steal his lunch money. Screw it, trial by fire, start Zu.
Luke, I know you are a rookie coach, but when JC/Lou take 5 straight possessions and dribble the ball backwards to the half court line with 7 seconds left on the clock you don't take out Zu, you take them two knuckleheads out of the game. And yes, the bench will play like crap sometimes and you have to go back to your starters earlier. It's alright you can do that once in awhile.
Some seriously bad coaching there. Me, @revgen, and @RandleROFY were railing on him in the Gameday thread. Those were just horrible possessions and really unacceptable. There was no good reason not to get the kids back in the game.
I think JC feeds off Lou's chuck-ness, in a really bad way. Lou and Clarkson are 1 and 3 on the team in usage rate and possessions consumed (other than by passing) per 36. Clarkson's 13.3 PER doesn't justify the possessions. In fact, the first person on the team, sorted by USG%, with a worse PER than Clarkson is Metta - with a 0.3 PER. Zero. Point. Three. Gotta move Lou and hope JC becomes more of the type of player he was in year 1 and 2.
Clarkson thinks he gets paid by the dribble. Clearly regressed. He might be one of those players who responded well to the B Scott tough love rather than the optimism of a Coach Luke.
I think everyone has been a bit surprised by how many minutes the bench is always allowed to play vs. the starters.
