Luke is going to be here for the next 20+ years. He is our Jerry Sloan, and he will coach here until he retires. #teflonLuke
I can't disagree with your notion but I have to admit, I think experience etc. is overrated. Either you are a good coach or a bad coach. I have seen many coaches in the NBA for 10+ years who have not impressed me and I have seen coaches like Stevens, Luke, etc. who have impressed me. Another guy is Eric Spoelstra...when he coached the LeBron team literally without experience everyone was bashing Riley. He then went on to win multiple championships and everybody shut up. Ty Lue came in without any experience and beat a 73 team GS in the Finals with Steve Kerr, coming back from 1-3 in the Finals...Nick Nurse is another guy coming fast and furious so far. In other words...experience helps but talent and skills are way more important. Luck too, with health, with draft, with trades, with front office and ownership etc... Its too complex to make an easy decision. But there is a general rule of thumb... if you coach a crap team you lose and you are an awful coach and if you coach a good team, you win and you are a great coach. Dwayne Casey is the coach of the year and sucks in Detroit according to Pistons fans. You can't magically turn lame ducks into championship horses.
I personally think good players are a big indicator on whether your labelled as a good or bad coach. Phil Jackson wouldn't take this years Cavs to the playoffs, would that make him garbage? By the same token, if you have awful players and then suddenly get great ones in a trade and win are you a great coach? Look at Brett Brown, is he excused from the blatant tank? If they don't win in the next two years is he garbage? Obviously the playoffs mitigates this to some extent, injuries etc also play a part. I think this is the same in football (soccer) Guardiola wouldn't coach Huddersfield to the title, so having the right personnel to me is just as important as having a good coach. I may have rambled too much.
^you are right. The right personnel makes or breaks the coach. For fans, it is pretty impossible to know how good a coach is if you aren't in the locker room, video sessions etc. Even then, you must have had experience with other coaches so you can compare whether this video session is better or worse than the other guys video session... Players are best suited to compare coaches after they have had a few. The problem is when you sign a "new coach"....chances are your players haven't played for him and can't give you an input and probably most FOs won't even ask the players.
Luke is good at defense and getting along well with his players . He sucks at rotations , offense and isn't the fastest when it comes to in game adjustments To summarize , he isn't bad enough to prevent a great team to win a title but he isn't a difference maker for an above average/good team. Get him a good offensive assistant , not Jesse freaking Mermuys In the "best" 15-20 coaches range I'd say. Our roster sucks for today's NBA though .
Yes but there are certain things you can do. For example when Spolestra started coaching the Heat they were 9-8 due to their offense. When he completely changed the offense after that they won a lot more games and made the finals that year. Luke could have done the same thing, but instead he runs the same bad offense I pointed out the flaws of after 2 preseason games. Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.
Cavs record without James (2014-17): 4-18 Lakers record without James: 5-7 That's with the Cavs playing in the Eastern Conference and having 2 allstars in Irving/Love. Despite the pessimism, Luke is doing just fine.
Props where they are due. Luke cracked down on them about the free throwing for real and they responded last night. And they won the game because of it so the lesson should hopefully sink in. Now will they shoot 90% from the line from hereon in? I seriously doubt it. But I'm glad he addressed it and that they took him seriously. And that was a huge win last night. 2nd best to me next to Xmas. We showed a lot of tenacity and battled for that. It seems to me that the young guys are listening to Luke. Now, I'm hoping that Luke will change up that starting lineup given what we all saw last night. End of game lineup deserves to start. Zu and Hart instead of KFC and Chandler, please.
I loved the Christmas game. Who doesn't love blowing out the Champ Champs. But I think this one was more important due to the recent struggles and doing it without LeBron.
Who do i blame now...i know it was working for most of game but i didnt liked our defense on harden...we were doubling him and then we gave lot of open corner 3( and i think PJ is leading the league from corner) we gave him a lot of space to drive, like a lot...and noone to challenge him inside...plus i dont know whas it kcp,but at least put the hands high,it was like he was at training...i know he is protected but at least make some hard fouls at him... And how hard is to inbund the ball we couldnt make it twice but we sure got 3 with less than 5 sec.
Luke gets ejected a couple of times every year. It's kind of embarrassing for a coach. And he gets T'd up a lot too. He must do a better job and keep cool. This young team needs a coach that gives them confidence, not a chicken little on the side line.
On the other hand, he shows his players a support and that he's got their backs. I think it's better this way having a young team like ours.
I was okay with it. We were getting hosed. I also think he was showing the young guys he had their back
Nothing embarrassing about Luke getting ejected to stand up for his players against Houston. It needs to be done sometimes and this was one of those cases.
