But it’s way too early to call this excessive. If it doesn’t get better then I think most of us will also call for his firing, but the guy deserves some time. It would be bad business not to see a larger sample size.
@bfc1125roy i literally thought of you when I saw that Magic was upset with Luke not having an offensive system...that was actually refreshing to hear an exec actually know what the real issues are with our coaching...Luke needs to implement SETS...even Tryonn Lue had sets for LeBron...we have none. Everything is fast break points. We need a half court offense and THAT is the reason we are losing leads in the 4th...obviously if we build up a 18 point lead...even if the other team scores...we need to continue to score to keep that lead right? Our leads evaporate also because our half court offense is non-existent. We should not keep thinking "our offense is fine"...our offense is not fine.
Just because Magic yelled at Luke about the offense doesn't mean that offense is actually the biggest issue. I'm not saying there is not room for improvement in the offense. There is, but we are still scoring enough points to be undefeated at this point. Go back and watch the end of that Mavs game. The D was the culprit.
This. Nobody here is saying the offense looks great. We just see it as a lower priority than the defense.
100% this Lots of "I thought you had him... well I thought YOU had him" in these games. A lot of that will settle down as players get to know each other, and hopefully when Tyson signs, we will have another communicator and big body to help on defense. As I've said before, I think the defense will come around, but it sure does look rough right now.
Oh I did...and what I saw was a combination of STALLED offense and bad defense. BUT, if our offense doesn't stall...we win that game easily. I believe the half court offense is just as big of a problem as the defense...
I disagree on the two issues being equally significant. "Offense wins championships" said no one ever. But I agree with you that the Mavs game should have been a blowout and would have been if either the D was better or the half court offense had not stalled.
The overall issue is adjustments. The Mavs caught onto our drop coverage and we didn’t really have an answer for it (even though there are many ways to respond). The same idea applies to the offense and why we weren’t able to score down the stretch with James standing around on the perimeter. All of it boils down to a system and identity. It’s hard for me to tell as conclusively if on defense it’s players messing up or Luke’s fault - especially since we did okay on that end last season. On offense, I know it’s a coaching issue based on what I saw last season and so far this season. The players are executing fine we just don’t have enough options built in. For example when we missed one dribble handoff against SA the second option was a McGee post up....
Actually, no. He did bring in Hart... but for Kuz instead of for "did nothing" BI. Other than that -- a nice TO... although it didn't help. Better here is a very very relative term, since the bar is so low.
It will never be enough for some fans. They're too far gone down the path of Luke must go. If we start winning it will be because of the players, if we lose it will be the coach. All those missed free throws and turnovers I thought were going to be Luke's fault, thank goodness they weren't....
