yeah, but we might have taken a bullet by not trading him at the deadline for a lower-salaried placeholder. i agree that jeff teague would be bad, but i don't think we're limited to that. i've already named a few, and there are always trade options. if signing schroder to a big deal costs us one of AC or THT, it's already a loss. if it impacts our ability to keep harrell or drummond or replace gasol if he walks, we lost. he's not more valuable to us than any of those right now, imo. and at 25 per, we wouldn't be able to trade him if we wanted. good news is rob hasn't made that kind of mistake yet. those 3/40 deals are good bets--match total value of MLE with higher annual payout, and only 3 year commitment means you're not totally screwed by mistakes/injuries. if schroder wants a 3/60 deal, i'm in. but 4/84 is off the table, and 25 per gets laughed out of the office.
Agree with this breakdown. Seeing as the rumor was we could have had Kyle Lowry, were willing to part with Dennis, but not willing to part with THT, I don't think there is any scenario where we would let Dennis cost us THT. Caruso on the other hand is possible. From what I can tell, it seems like we knew what he wanted, so why didn't we trade him at the deadline for someone who maybe had a couple years on their contract so we don't lose him for nothing? It's not like his production is completely irreplaceable for this season.
I agree with the above thought that Teague would be a bad replacement. BUT I wouldn't mind Teague if we got Rose. He's insurance for a Rose injury and I don't think either are 30 MPG players. But I'll gladly take both of them at a minimum deal over Dennis for a dime over $16M a year.
I think Schroder had to be retained regardless of his contract situation because the priority is always winning a title this year, and not next year. Unless, of course, there was a trade available at the deadline that wouldn't have been a downgrade, factoring both talent and depth.
I think that the Laker fans are going to love Schroder when it gets to the post season, I have that feeling he will be one of those players that raises his game to another level
Will be interesting to see if he can stay in front of Irving tomorrow, or rather how often he can accomplish that. Ultimate test with that guy’s handles.
He’s a great sixth man that wants more. It would be better for him and us if he’d accept that’s what he is, but it doesn’t look like it will happen. hopefully he shows out in the playoffs and gets the contract of his dreams.
Hey @JSM, I just watched a YouTube video suggesting a SnT of DS and Lonzo from a dude named JSM. Is that you? If so, your voice reminds me a lot of the YouTube Chills. (Good natured ribbing old friend)
Yes he's Dragic and like Dragic he can be of incredible value to a contending team: guys who can get to the rim against playoff-caliber defenses are excellent and hard to defend when put next to star players. Dragic is older but he's also more proven in the playoffs: he got a contract of 18.7 million a year for 2 years. That amount of money but with a longer contract is completely fair for both sides. If he can find a better deal more power to him but 20 million a year while fine (good to give a discount to your own to keep morale high) IMO, the Lakers going above that makes no sense. Best thing to do in this situation and see how this plays out in the playoffs.
I would hate to commit multiple years to a shaky player with a poor mindset/outlook like him. His game doesn't translate to high production or wins either Will be curious to see if this dude is another playoff Rondo
Lakers have to go after a veteran point guard who knows how to run the offense and can shoot the ball. A guy like Mike Conley who is a free agent after this season would be a great pick-up. If the Lakers could get him for 3 years, $60 million which would be right around LeBron's contract as well, I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea. His age and injuries can be a concern but I'm more-so highlighting the type of player the Lakers would need in the PG position. The problem with these young guys like Schroder is they see all the money Lillard and Steph are getting and want to get paid. Schroder's problem is it's becoming incredibly evident that he had an outlier season shooting the ball and Chris Paul was the reason OKC was as successful as they were. If you think about it, Schroder isn't actually a very skillful player. Most of his game is hustle so when his shot is off, all you can depend on is his grittiness out there on the court. I would love if the Lakers took a look at DeRozan. Maybe him being from LA and his father passing away could trigger an emotional reasoning for him to take less and play for the Lakers even if it's just for one season. He's not a great shooter but he's also never been in a situation where he isn't getting open shots. With AD+Bron drawing the attention, maybe it opens up the court for DeRozan to have enough confidence to start taking those shots. He's a great playmaker with 7.1 assists averaging under 2 turnovers and his ability to get to the FT line and convert at a high rate is exactly what we need. AD+DeMar or DeMar+Bron would work considering DeMar has had experience playing with another dominant ball-handler in Lowry and LaMarcus is sorta similar to what AD can do offensively. Verdict is still out on Schroder. If he plays poorly in the playoffs, I don't see him re-signing with the Lakers or the Lakers offering him more than they already have. If he does well and we win the chip, you gotta give Schroder a premium to retain him. Championships are all that matters and if Schroder can prove he can perform under the bright lights, there is no reason they shouldn't pay him.
This is what I kind of meant, with his 1st half play. He is playing hobbled, it might tighten up even more with the break, so it could make it harder for him to perform in the 2nd half, I hope I'm wrong
The problem for Schroeder is there is 20 yo combo guard with a freakish 7 foot wingspan who can get to the rim at will and is already a terrific playmaker on the roster. Name another young guard who can take anyone on the Nets to school except Kevin Durant who guarded him well? Pelinka is going to be like well we're going to pay him so you want to stay on a fair deal or go?
I like to have both Dennis and THT, but he'll have to take less $, I'm sorry. The Kid can already do just as much.
He was awesome before he got ejected though, scoring at the rim at will, dishing assists, great defense. I’m not against re-signing him, but it has to be at the right price, he does bring a great intensity on defense and a gamer mentality.
Major respect for taking a charge with Griffin running in to him. Hard fall and still stayed in the game and played fantastic. Love it
