True. I'm not sure exactly what good it would do. Byron stinks. We need to replace him. Pretending to like him doesn't change that.

Yeah I mean even other coaches have to see this and understand he sucks. I'm not sure what protecting him does other than garner Kumbaya feelings towards our "family" members.

There's no logic to this. It can't be a money thing either, the Lakers made probably made more than B0ron's yearly salary in Kobe's final game alone. Hell I read they sold like 1.2 million in Kobe merchandise alone.

I'm ready to cut these family ties. BS has brought this franchise two of the worst seasons in franchise history, constantly taking manhood shots at his own team and even disrespecting the fans. Oh and something about the worst coaching record ever. Then you have those well respected Showtime guys backing this fool. They are a part of our history, yes, but can we cut them away from the future? Please!

I'm warming up to the Scotty Brooks possibility. I've never been a fan of his but man, just the prospect of someone better than Byron has got me excited again. Just hearing that he wants the Lakers job is a huge boost. From the sound of it Luke wants to stay at least another year in GS. If so, let's get Brooks in here on a short contract and see if he can develop our guys. He did do a good job in that respect at OKC. He couldn't get them over the hump, but he did help develop Durant, Westbrook, Harden and Ibaka. Can't fault him for that. And we are desperate for someone who can actually do so with our young core instead of blaming them for losses and screwing with their minutes. I can't stand another season full of that. Sign me up for Brooks.

^^^ I was against Brooks earlier this season as well, I think I said it would be almost lateral, from one bad Scott to another. Well, my eyes have been opened, NO ONE is worse than B0ron, compared to him Brooks is Phil Jackson. I'd take him in a second if like you said he'd come on a shorter deal, 3 years instead of 4 or 5. I don't think he's the guy to get us to a title, but I agree he would be very good for our young core like he was for OKC's, and the main thing is we need to get B0ron away from them as soon as possible, far, far away.

Lakers are only going to terminate Byron if Luke gives his assurance he wants to coach here next season. It's his job if he wants it. If he doesn't, Byron will be back.

I think the Lakers are resisting letting Durant "pick his coach" but I think another way Brooks could be an option is if the Lakers got word that Brooks opened that door. If Mitch thought Brooks meant a fast track for Durant, I think he'd have to consider it.

I really hope they take that chance because retaining Boron is worse than just the "going nowhere slowly" feeling that he'll bring and the horrible record he'll undoubtedly give us once again. He is just the absolutely worst HC candidate imaginable for our young core after the job he did last season. Like Weezy I want him nowhere near these guys. If there's even an iota of a chance that he would have some appeal for Durant I hope they bring him in - really just to have a change of pace and different coach than Boron.

I don't want to play a waiting game with Luke. There's too much at stake right now. Get rid of this buffoon HC.

I could definitely see Washington hiring Scott Brooks in an attempt to curry favor with "hometown" Durant. We'll see if that helps. The Wizards missing the Playoffs WITH John Wall and the overrated Beal/Gortat combo is not a good look for attracting Durant to a smaller market, even if it is a homecoming.

Durant is signing a 1 and 1 with OKC. It just makes too much sense. OKC gives him the best chance at a title next season (granted he doesn't go to GS) and then he and Westbrook leave together, or stay together. It's another reason I'm not a fan of wrapping up money in Whiteside because I believe the 2017 offseason will give a team with the cap space the opportunity of signing both Durant and Westbrook. We can snag one real good player, but if we have the Whiteside albatross around our necks, Durant and Westbrook wouldn't THINK about giving us a look. I'd rather get a lesser player that we know will be productive than roll the dice on a guy who could destroy our free agency appeal for 3 years.

Quit it with your anti-Whiteside propaganda! :D

Signing Whiteside doesn't preclude us from signing both of them. I also didn't argue whether or not Durant signs the 1+1, I'm just giving Washington's side of it. Besides, this summer if we can get Whiteside and Derozan, I'll take that and let the chips fall where they may. Those two mixed with Russell, Clarkson, a Top 3 pick, Randle, and Nance Jr. is a heck of a future. Or maybe you go with those two (and change by the way) with Russell, Randle, and Jimmy Butler? I mean that's easily a playoff team. I could coach that team to the playoffs probably. I'm not going to pass on having a really good team today for the chance at having maybe a good team next summer. What happens when you pass on Whitside to wait a year and Durant/Westbrook just re-sign in OKC anyway. Woohoo! Now we have nothing. I'd rather have something. If Durant/Westbrook want to hold hands and pick their next team, we can figure out a way to get the available cash to get to them.

By the way a max deal to Whiteside doesn't stop us from getting Durant/Westbrook if we want to. I'm sure there's trades out there we can make for our top flight young talent to pave the way.

You can't have it both ways. You can't pitch free agents on our young talent while simultaneously throwing THEM under the bus for our historically bad seasons instead of the coach.

Durant might consider coming to be the centerpiece around which Russell, Clarkson, Randle, Nance, Simmons develop. A lot of candidates out there, Brooks, Thibodeau, Van Gundy, Walton, Ollie are coaches regarded highly enough that they could be part of the sales pitch to a free agent.

MAYBE Byron did do a decent job at balancing Kobe's retirement while successfully leading a tank and getting the youth SOME development. But there's no way anyone else will see that. There's no way Byron is held in such high regards that we can pitch him to free agents. In fact, we'd have to pitch AROUND him and once again ignore basketball considerations.

Mitch said they'd take a few days or weeks to unwind and then he'd have an informal lunch with Byron and Jim. Why wait? To give yourselves a built in excuse when the rest of the viable coaching options go elsewhere? There's no new information to digest. The season has been over since December. This moment has been in the making since Kobe's Achilles tear. We need to make a big splash in terms of free agency, coaching, the face of the franchise. We need regime change and there should be a plan in place to carry that out already. This HAS to be obvious to everyone in the front office.

So I'm almost convinced that this is all charades. We wanna make a Hollywood story about our resurgence in the post-Kobe era and this posturing for Byron is all a part of that. Byron's gone and he knows it. We have another coach lined up. Phil, or someone else who can effectively serve as the face who can be influential in sales pitches, is already lined up to come back. Maybe some back alley deal with Silver to keep our pick. Agents have given us indications that Durant is interested if we make all these moves.

    Wishful thinking?

No. Not having Whiteside is something. Something to be celebrated.
