Doesn't that plan insure Jim Buss is gone. Isn't his deadline 2017 to be in playoffs.

I get what you're putting out there. I will say that I really want Luke to be our coach more than ever now.

Short of LeBron and Durant teaming up here this summer, isn't he going to be fired anyway? The criteria for keeping him (and Mitch) here apparently is the Western Conference Finals. I don't know that there's any other combination besides LeBron/Durant that gets us to the Western Conference Finals next season.

Well, I suppose Randle, Clarkson and Russell could make the most monumental leaps in NBA history along with some solid signings. But we're talking at least two of them being Derrick Rose Year Two type players in their second seasons.

I don't think there's any reasonable way we'll be in the Western Conference Finals next summer so we'll see exactly how serious Jeanie is about making a move.

Jeanie Buss is overreaching asking for a WCF appearance. Making the playoffs would be a reasonable goal even as a low seed considering the youth personnel in place and the uncertainty of retaining the current coach or more importantly who is his replacement.

Oh I agree, but she's sticking to the timeline that Jim himself built. She indicated earlier this season that she won't stray from that timeline either and made no bones about it... I wonder if she'll stay so motivated and so sure. I tend to think she'll back off if they make the playoffs next season, but I'm not sure that's realistic.

We'll have a successful summer, make the PO's, and she'll back off.

I don't think it's even possible for us to do that. Who was the last team to make a jump like that? Like to go from awful to contenders in one year. The only one recently was Boston in 2008. They acquired two superstars in the summer and obviously already had one. We don't have any currently and there is only one superstar in free agency. Even if we got Durant I don't see us being more than second round exit team.

Edit: Forgot about the Cavaliers last year.

Not even Jeannie is clear on what Jim's criteria is

    http://nba.nbcsports.com/2016/03/04...east-second-round/?ocid=Yahoo&partner=ya5nbcs

"Competing for the WCF". At least the 2nd round. The criteria is nonsense, it's in flux, it could go to first round, then down to 9th seed for all we know. The entire FO is a jumbled mess of a joke right now.

I believe it was Kobe who said it last season that there is an obvious disconnect between people in the front office. It still looks like that is the case. That needs to change or changes have to be made. There needs to be goals set and everyone has to be on the same page about it. I don't even know why the West Finals are a goal. We're not a franchise that ever settled for that. It should be about getting back to a championship level. Winning championships. That's what we've been about and that's all that should matter. Period.

The deadline goal was self-imposed by Jim, which was idiotic. We are in a rebuild, the goals have to be realistic, done in steps. We sucked, so we got good picks, so the goal was at that time to draft well, and we did. Randle was a great pick. Clarkson was a steal. Russ was again the correct pick if even maybe a gamble to many. Then Nance Jr., if his knees hold up, was yet another late first round steal.

The goal this season should have been to develop the youth, and while the Kobe farewell tour and B0ron might have held that back for a while, it appears this is starting to no longer be the case, and the youth are taking matters into their own hands. Kobe has been injured and hardly playing even when he does start games, so they are getting to develop, it isn't too late to keep that going with 20 games or so left.

The next goal should be to fire B0ron, and for the love of god stop hiring horrible freaking coaches. That's a realistic goal, it's doable. 2nd goal, use that crapload of money we have to go after and sign some really solid free agents, if we are unable to land a star FA. Don't wait around 2 weeks on a star and then be left with scraps, start to add some damn talent to this team, you have the money to go after 2nd tier guys AND wait on a Durant. Then you start to look competetive night after night and win 30-40 games with a group that continues to improve and grow, or even more with miracle like Durant plus a 2nd tier guy. These are realistic goals for a rebuild. Do these things, you earn the trust back of the fanbase, you work your way back up like all teams that rebuild have to do, and nobody has to take blame, be fired, be a scapegoat, it can be all good, all around. Groom Ryan West more and more for the job if Mitch doesn't want to do it for much longer, and you're building something.

I just don't see why this isn't repairable between these siblings if these silly deadlines are put aside and we can finally hire a real coach, and attract a couple of really good players here for the first time in a long time. We were not great when I started watching the Lakers in '92/'93, but we rebuilt, and it didn't take 3 seasons to get back to contention, it took a bit longer, and that was with getting Shaq, and the players we had drafted and developed becoming all-stars. And we didn't actually win again until 2000 as we all know, these things take TIME. We need to be optimistic and hopeful, but also realistic. If they for ONCE hire a good coach since Phil was fired, I will be happy. If we for once land 2 guys to fill roles we have major needs in, even if 2nd tier guys, instead of swinging and missing on superstars and settling for scraps, I will be happy, it's progress.

How hilarious would it be if we don't sign any free agents this offseason and Jeanie just fires Mitch and Jim now thinking we are doomed...then Randle and Russell come out like gangbusters and we win 50 games.

Great post, Weezy. The only thing I would add is that during the 90's Jerry was alive and in charge and things never got this bad; missing the playoff's, internal organizational division/agenda's, etc. Agreed with the rest, though, and I think you'll see the approach to free agency that you outlined.

It says in the quote: at least the second round, if not more.

If the Lakers have the summer everyone expects, they'll be lucky to make the 8th seed. That means we're playing the 1st round against probably SAS or GS... Anyone expecting the second round at least?

You're right it's unrealistic and weird, but she's sticking to that. I think she's made her mind up to move on from her brother (and probably Mitch) next summer barring anything crazy happening for us.

I suppose this quote is already old news and I'm late to the party but I just have to address it. Out of all the imbecile comments BS has made during his tenure here, this might be the worst of them all.

Byron, with no due respect, please go and cure your insecurity somewhere else, the manhood of other men, Lakers players included, will take care of itself without your insightful comments.

All that coming from someone who openly pouted when Riley questioned his after the Memorial Game Massacre in 1985 and after his disappearing act on the road in the 1987 Finals.
