most of what makes advanced stats is contextualization, but they're misused as representing properties only of the player and not his system, role, etc. they try to account for some of that statistically, but no one has actually found a way to do it well. it's why stats said amir johnson was a top ten nba player for a couple years running, when everyone knew he was simply a solid backup 5.

 

Ox, I'm with you. Advanced metrics obviously doesn't tell the whole story. There's just way too many aspects of the game that can't be truly quantified. Like @abeer3 said, noone has derived an algorithm to truly account for all the intangibles the game presents and scrunch it into a number. For example, I use Hollinger's PER statistic from time to time and Hollinger even explains that its not a "final, once-and-for-all evaluation", but just a crude forecast of a player's productivity. He considers variables of a team's pace but obviously throughout the season, a team's pace can be affected game to game, so its nowhere near a perfect metric.

All in all, these numbers are used to just debate a player's worth and I'm sure can be valuable for front offices in any trade discussions. The plus side for us, is that our players on the trade block (ie Randle and Clarkson) are ranked respectably high in many advanced metrics (JC is 43rd and Randle is 65th in PER). If these abstract numbers boost up trade value and overall team value, I'm for it...but I agree that it doesn't capture the exact impact of a player.

i don't even call PER "advanced". it's a box score stat, really. i came up with something as sophisticated when i was 14 for a class project (pats self on back for predicting steve nash as an eventual mvp while he was still trying to earn minutes in dallas).

RPM and its cousins are better attempts at accounting for other factors, but again, in the end, they all sort of suck. part of the issue is that they're validated against the eye test (IRONY ALERT) in almost all cases--because when they're not, amir johnson is the BEST!

there's certainly a place for using data in sports. in basketball, it's extra-complicated, and i'm not entirely sure anyone has really gamed the system with analytics...ever. i hear people say morey (who passed on covington twice, right?), but his "genius" philosophy is GET STARZ. way to go, chubbs.

Great game tonight. Brandon was the second best player on the floor tonight. Why he rarely touched the ball down the stretch I have no idea. Inexcusable.

If you think you got it going, call for the ball. Get more vocal out there BI...damn! I doubt Kuz will ever have that problem. BI needs to impose himself amongst his teammates when he's got it going on like that. Embiid was sitting on 4 fouls for a while and was challenging everything. Duck your head, get in there and foul that dude out.

The refs are going to swallow their whistles when it comes to young teams, but Philly is just as young....force that whistle goddammit.

I just have this feeling he's going to shoot a lot better at some point not too far off. Maybe like last year 2nd half this season? 2 weeks from now? Next year?

 

When he is on like last night, man is his jumper so nice to watch. Hits the net so soft it seems.

 

The same was said about Lonzo and now many are calling for him to stop shooting. With the changes to his mechanics, it’s possible he’s shown a tendency to revert to old habits as he extends his range and it’s more important to get comfortable with the new form.

 

What about my feeling?

 

If he was looking for getting 2s and 3s off with his length and quickness he'd be unstoppable if hitting them at a decent to good per cent.
