I'm no A Brown fan, I've made that super clear, but I don't get waiving him over MWP. If forced to choose which guy I want to throw in at backup 2/3 due to injuries or foul trouble I choose Brown, Metta is done.
Maybe I missed some moments but I thought AB looked pretty decent in the limited minutes he was given. I'm a bit surprised.
If one of our wings goes down requiring us to give spot minutes to our third string SF ... I'd rather have it be MWP over AB. Yes, I think even at his age, MWP is currently a better shooter and defender than AB. The mentorship aspect seals the deal. I'm very happy with cutting Yi and Brown for Metta and Robinson.
That's what I was thinking, then I realized AB had been playing so bad, we'd get about the same production from a D Leaguer we can call up. If they weren't sold on MWP as a coach, but still liked what he brought to practice, this might be the best choice.
could also be that mwp will be sort of a placeholder, who could be cut and moved to coaching staff if a trade or FA pickup arises.
Wow, I'm frankly surprised by this. I've already gone on record saying I can't stand Anthony Brown, but MWP is done-zo. I would rather they have kept him on as a defensive assistant than give him a spot when Brown already had a guaranteed contract, but oh well. MWP seems to really want to stay on a roster and not switch over to coach mode yet. He probably let them know and so they cut Brown. Ultimately I'm fine with it as I thought Brown sucked. Just not sure that MWP can bring anything more on the court.
btw, i didn't expand on this earlier, but i think it's gutsy to cut brown. it's much easier to just keep hoping that having his bird rights will matter, but the point of drafting a 23 year old is that they can play now. if he can't, you gotta move on.
Surprised to say the least. I didn't see this coming at all. I wish he could've been more productive. The fact that management was willing to eat guaranteed salary speaks volumes.
Happy about this. He was given ample opportunity to show something. He did not. Maybe he ends up having a solid career as a utility guy off someone's bench, but now that Ingram is starting to look like he is getting it, bit by bit, and you have Deng and a reinvigorated Swaggy at the 3 as well, he wasn't going to get minutes. And people ask why Metta over him? If we're in a situation where we are playing our 4th best small forward, does it really matter who's getting the minutes?
Yeah. I think it was one of those things where the 4th string sf isn't a big deal, so why not give the spot to someone who can contribute other things like coaching or serve as a mentor. Pretty crazy. If someone told me 10 years ago Ron Artest would make an NBA roster as a player coach/mentor, I would have wondered what kind of world we were living in come 2016. I probably would have thought if that's where we're at as a country, our presidential election must be all kinds of f---ed up. I mean, what's next? The Cubs are in the World Series?
i think i said this about brown last year. people forget that danny green bounced around a bit before the spurs found him, and he wasn't as good a shooter before. brown may very well end up becoming a good nba player, but the key is to be the team that picks these guys up right when they're ready, not two years before. lakers were justified to let him go. now, i'd prefer to be more creative with the last roster spot, but if they think mwp is THAT positive an influence, who am i to judge?
