This is only his 2nd year with us, not his 3rd. That's the only "justification" I can see for keeping him on, and it's a scary one. I can completely see the Lakers saying he had to deal with the "Kobe situation" and a bunch of young players, and they don't want to fire another coach so soon into his deal (2 years of his 4 year deal) and search for another, so he gets another year. Scares the crap out of me honestly. Because if he's kept on, I can't see myself watching much without Kobe next season. The only thing that could get me to tune in if he's kept is if we land a big star, or multiple 2nd tier stars.

It's not just about his record though, it's about what he means in the forum of public opinion. He's clearly the worst coach in basketball right now. Everyone knows it. Prospective FAs know it too. If there's someone on the fence about coming here and Byron ends up being a reason for them not to... Well s*** we made the worst decision possible. It's easy to find another crappy coach. It's very difficult to attract talent in FA.

Fire Byron, make a splashy new hire, then go after some FAs with momentum on your side. It seems so easy to me.

I'm not trying to justify that he stay, I agree with every word you said. I am genuinely scared the Lakers FO don't have the guts (balls) to fire him after the big show they put on when he was hired and all the support and excuses they've given him this season. He should be fired already, but he isn't, and I am afraid the Lakers are being lazy, or prideful, or delusional, or all of the above. I fear they'll say "we'll get him a better roster and give him another season", when we know nobody is coming here as long as he's coach, they don't seem to know that. But I agree with you, he should be fired the day after the season ends. His exit interview should literally be an exit interview.

I think the delay right now is what you're seeing/saying. They're not firing him TODAY because:

    - Hometown hero
    - They made a huge fuss originally
    - They fear the replacement will be worse
    - They don't want to look bad for making the wrong choice
    - They don't want to fire/push out another coach for the third time in a row
    - etc

If they go into the summer and decide to keep him, I'm bailing. I'll come on here and judge their performance on your guys' take. :D There's simply no reason to keep him. Kobe will be gone so he's not even here to kiss up to Kobe anymore. The kids are ready to move on, the team can't keep tanking, the ratings will be negative five, and the money will dry up. They NEED to let him go. I still have faith they will.

I will be absolutely appalled if they don't.

I think they want to fire him at a time when there's positive news to overcome the negative vibe after firing their 3rd coach in 5 years.

They're hoping a draft pick in the 2016 draft will do that.

They are also hoping that firing Byron in the summer will create less hoopla than firing him mid-season. Especially if they can hire a new coach quickly. Media outlets can talk about the new coach + draft pick and not about 3 coaches fired in 5 years.

They are sacrificing the development of these kids to satisfy their own vanity/ego.

I think real's point about his ties to the organization is a big one. it's not the laker way to dump him like they did mike brown.

i'll be very surprised if he's at the helm in august. I'm guessing they're giving him enough rope to hang himself, so to speak.

It was another very ugly game for most of tonight. Glad they eked out a win at the end, but they were better than the other team and it shouldn't have been that close. We didn't have our first lead of the game until the 4th. Well, I guess a win is a win. We'll take it.

All of our games are ugly. It's a result of having no discernible offensive or defensive schemes to execute.

They played down to the competition. What a horrible shooting night for them and that's been a theme lately too.

I wonder what these guys do in practice.

They do suicides for 3 hours and then bounce a ball off the wall back to themselves for about 5 minutes. Then, shower.

They need to be learning how to set screens in practice. We have to be one of the worst teams at that. Even if someone does set a screen the guard either goes away from it or goes before the screener is set.

It was an ugly game. Very ugly. I guess that happens when teams know what plays you're going to be running and the shots you create are mostly contested. We struggled against a very bad team without their best player, but I'll take the wins where I can get then.

Not only do we suck at setting screens, we suck at getting around screens defensively.

Less suicides, more actual basketball instruction please.

you'd figure with a coach as centered on GRITITUDE as scott, setting and navigating screens would be like, the only thing these guys could do.

Byron just rolls balls onto the floor and forces players to dive for them...over...and over.

Brooklyn is going to go after Thibs once they get their new GM in place. I swear if he goes to Brooklyn while we are stuck with Byron because the FO doesn't want to look bad and we miss out....

    I'm going to rage.
