No. There is some self-imposed deadline for this team becoming a contender or he will step down from his position after 3 seasons. I forget in the last interview about this if this was year 1 or 2 thigh, feel like it was year one and we all laughed. Other catch is, what exactly does he have to get us to or not get us too? Playoffs? 2nd round or better? What is the goal here that lets him keep his job?

Either way it's all BS, he's not stepping down, and Jeanie isn't firing him despite saying she'll step in if things don't change. If we make the playoffs next season or the one after they'll say see we're on the way back, everyone gets a raise! I don't care if Buss stays or goes anyway, unless he hires another garbage coach or we make some horrorible deal that truly hurts the team. Other than that who are we looking to get to replace him anyway? Not like some great president of basketball operations is trying to get this job, unless he goes and Mitch takes it and Ryan West becomes GM.

No Jeanie said she will replace Jim if the Lakers can't get to the WCF by 2017 ... whereas Jim said by 2018

To be fair.... Lakers are setting a record (?) of our own this season. Worst coaching staff of 21st century.

    You rock Byron.

Serious question because I've put the last two seasons out of my head, and it's looking like the same might happen for this season, but:

Is this the worst start to a season in Laker history? Or at least in the Buss era?

Last year he gets mostly a pass. Planned stealth tank or not (once the "tank" was in the field). Plus all the major injuries decimating the roster. Netted us the 2nd pick and D'Angelo Russell. This season .... NO pass. He is responsible completely for how Bad this much talent is performing. No doubt about it. Almost too many reasons to mention.

Weez and WC, actually 423J is correct. Jim Buss said he would resign in three to four years if he hadn't built a contender back in 2014. For some reason this keeps getting rebooted every year and he seems to have given himself more time . . .

Lakers' Jim Buss: I'll quit if club doesn't contend 'in 3 or 4 years'

Lakers owner and head of basketball operations Jim Buss says he told his family business during a January business meeting that he will step down if the Lakers do not return to contention within "three or fours years." From the Los Angeles Times:

"I was laying myself on the line by saying, if this doesn't work in three to four years, if we're not back on the top — and the definition of top means contending for the Western Conference, contending for a championship — then I will step down because that means I have failed," he told The Times about the meeting. "I don't know if you can fire yourself if you own the team … but what I would say is I'd walk away and you guys figure out who's going to run basketball operations because I obviously couldn't do the job.

"There's no question in my mind we will accomplish success. I'm not worried about putting myself on the line."

via LA Times - Buss family faces crucial moment with the Lakers.

Buss has been under heat since taking over operations several years ago. It has been widely reported that the decisions to let Phil Jackson go after 2011 was his call, that the decision to bring in Mike Brown, fire Mike Brown, then hire Mike D'Antoni over Jackson were also his.

Meanwhile, in a year they expected to take a step back from contention due to Dwight Howard's departure but still be in the mix, the Lakers put up the worst record in franchise history. Injuries to almost all of the Lakers, but especially Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash, had a huge impact on that, but it also reflects the awful team they put around them, signing players like Chris Kaman, Nick Young and Robert Sacre.

The Lakers gave Bryant a two-year, $49 million extension before he had even returned from his Achilles injury, then watched him go down with a fractured leg after six games. They are cap strapped with aging assets, as Nash has indicated he won't retire, freeing up the $10 million owed to him.

Buss will have cap space in 2015, however, with room to remake the team with starpower, especially should Kevin Love opt out of his contract. But the Lakers have also indicated they intend to re-sign Pau Gasol, which could further limit their ability to improve.

Either way, it's a bold move by the younger Buss to put himself on the line like that, especially as the Times reports on younger siblings with basketball backgrounds waiting to potentially take over.

The Lakers recently signed GM Mitch Kupchak to a multi-year deal on the eve of clinching the worst record in franchise history.

So he'll probably give himself the full 4 years? I doubt we make it to the WCF in 2018. Though at this point I would be happy if we even sniffed the playoffs.

I actually think so. We were 3-11 at this point last year. Absent a miracle we will be 2-12 after tonight.

The talking heads on am710 are saying that the only reason Byron is taking heat is because the team is losing. "Winning cures all" and if the team were winning games nobody would be complaining. That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. There is no way, NONE, that any team would be winning the way Byron has been coaching.

No, he asked if Jim Buss said he'd sell the team if they didn't find success in the next few years. He didn't say that, he only said he'd quit. I still don't believe him anyway, and again, if we are headed in the right direction and spend money and land some quality players, hire a better coach, I see no need for him to go anyway. We have drafted and signed well lately, Jim doesn't appear to me to be hurting us there, at least not on his own. If there's a problem with our mindset and being behind the times it's not just on Jim, it's on the whole family. Plus these things take time, we didn't make a Finals from 1992 until 2000 (or win from 1988), you don't magically make a contender all the time.

Sounds like listening to whoever those idiots are would be bad for your health. Certainly would be for mine, as far as anger and blood pressure go. To say that is to insult all of our intelligence as fans.
