Thibs would be the best coach we've had since Phil. If it doesn't happen, it better be because he wasn't interested in the job.

See, this is why I don't want Phil back here, he only wants his guys. Rambis is not a good head coach, he's not, don't want him. This is a reason I'm not thrilled with the idea of Jim and Mitch being tossed and yet Jeannie remaining with all the power. They all need to go, sell the team for all I care.

As I mentioned last night, if Mitch can capitalize this summer and fire Scott, get a decent head coach, and our together a decent squad next year, I would elevate Mitch into Jim's role and place Ryan West in Mitch's role.

Mitch can play the role of mentor that Jerry played for him while he was coming up, and I think an organizational restructure similar to that could appease Jeanie in the present while we groom and prepare our future GM.

Yesterday on 710 they discussed an option that Steve Mason had brought up before:

    1. Elevate Jim Buss to simple "owner" so that he's not working on things day-to-day. He is hands off.
    2. Elevate Mitch Kupchak to more of an advisory position (what you said basically).
    3. Hire Kevin Durant's Assistant GM friend Troy Weaver (?) to be the new GM.
    4. Promote Ryan West to Assistant GM.
    5. Fire Byron and replace him with Kevin Ollie.
    6. Take this new found power structure to Kevin Durant and say "We'll trade some of our youth for another star and we've got enough room to add a third star along with you. Want to take up your idol's mantle?"

Now, I don't much care about the Durant part of the pitch but the rest I'm interested in. Moving Jim Buss to a position with less scrutiny, bringing in fresh blood, and rewarding good employees within the system is the perfect move. Interestingly, Ireland said this was a possibility that the Lakers have most definitely considered.

Of course Ireland then went on to say he believes Byron will be back next year and Luke is staying in Golden State so.... :D

I am hearing mixed reports on Byron. If this organization brings him back next season, that's going to be depressing. As far as Luke, I think he sticks in GS.

I am too, but the sad part is the "Byron stays" are people close to the organization and the "Byron goes" are people who, like us, are seeing this trainwreck from a relative distance and can't imagine him being around another year.

I'm inclined to think it's just damage control and that the Lakers are planning to let him go, but preparing us for the worst case scenario so that they a) can cover their a** and b) want the payoff of him leaving to be felt by all the fans.

But that could easily be wishful thinking...

Jerry West was about Mitch's age now when he left the team in 2000, so I won't feel too bad if Mitch is removed from his current role. However, Ryan West is currently in his mid-30's. If he becomes the GM, he'd be one of the youngest GM's in the league. Bringing in an older guy who's somewhere between Mitch and Ryan would be preferable. I'm not familiar with Troy Weaver, but he may be a good candidate to replace Mitch.

You're not trying but that is the understatement of the year. How about like "detonating a dirty bomb" within the Lakers organization and all of its loyal Lakers fans. Am making a joke, but like a nuclear exchange is unthinkable, and a dirty bomb is not something you'd hope for on any given day .... that's about it for this franchise.

I keep coming back to these types of shots, speaking from the fan base.

Even Magic was quoted in TMZ the other day with this photo to make his point:

Age doesn't concern me. Ryan has been working his way up in the organization; according to Pincus, he is being groomed as the next GM. Why not accelerate that path to promotion by promoting him and specifically putting him under Mitch to be mentored by? If that reason is because of his age, and you'd want someone a little more seasoned and experienced, I'd have to agree to disagree.

I don't know; I've been following Larry Coon, and he said he'd be very 'surprised' to see Byron coaching he Lakers next season. However, the only person who had remain adamant that Byron could potentially be back is Ireland; I sure hope he's wrong.

how about moving jim buss as far away from LA as possible?

that's where i'd start. as long as he's involved in daily operations with this team, things won't go anywhere.

as for mitch, i'd really like to see him get a promotion and for ryan west to be brought in as the new GM. i'd really hate to see mitch go

and no more of these recycled head coaches like byron. bring in a fresh new face. someone like ollie, luke, kenny atkinson, ed pinckney, or sean miller. this team had guys like quin snyder, steve clifford, and ettore messina as assistants and no one saw any potential in any of them. two of them have proven to be decent HC's and messina should get a shot very soon

Ramona Shelbourne has said it as well. I heard Larry and for what it's worth Woj agrees that there's little chance Byron says. I hope they're right. I mean just seeing it from any prospective besides saving a couple million, it makes zero sense to bring back Byron.
