I'm considering it, but I know I need to see what the reality of the job is first. When I was looking into being a volunteer cop in LA, you get to choose what you do, because you're doing it or free, so detective work would have been the position I chose.

Not sure yet. I've worked with them and as of right now, it doesn't really catch my attention... They work behind the scenes, put together the pieces and obviously try to solve all kinds of crimes.... Thing is, it's so mundane, boring and I'm stuck in a cubicle for a good portion of the day. I like being out in the front line and being the first responder. I like being out with the public, I feel like I bring a different type of flavor to policing... I'm a native of my hometown and I feel like I have alot to offer to patrol... I bring some old school policing to the table, while keeping it fresh and adding new things to it to keep up with the ever so changing social climate.

Detectives isn't as glamrous as shows make it out to be.... they're never out in the field lol.

Doesn't surprise me that what is portrayed is different from reality...

off topic, but when did George Lucas lose all that weight and why is he on CNN talking about the Klan???

on topic, doesn't suprise me at all. Those folks find a way to get in where there is power.

So I took the C.H.I.P police physical assessment test this past Sunday.

You have 4 components to the test. For my age I had 29 sit-ups, and 18 push-ups I had to do each in 1 minute. I passed those easily. Then the 300 meter run. My time to beat was 72 seconds, and i made it in 58 seconds, equaling the time requirements for a 21 year old. Unfortunately I blew my load on that 300 meter, and I just couldn't do the 1.5 mile run that started 10 minutes after. It was 6 laps around the track, with the sun beating down, and I could barely do 1 at that point, so I dropped out. It wasn't something I could push forward through, so I'd rather drop than pass out. It kind of sucks, but I have borderline asthma, so I wasn't that surprised. I knew the 1.5 mile would be the only real challenge.

So now, I got a personal trainer, and will retake the test in November after I have some time to train harder and get my stamina up. I don't like to waste money, so I won't fail this again now that I know what it's like.

I hate running. In the AF we had to run twice a year. Typical passing time for my age group was 1 1/2 miles at 12 minutes. Did I mention I hate running? Here is what I did and it may help you:
    - Start out at whatever you can do (1/4, 1/2, 3/4) and do that for about 3 days. Skip a day in between if needed at the beginning, as you'll be really sore the first day or two. Don't worry about your time. Just get out there and run that amount (and walk some if needed). Then on day 4, start keeping times. Do that for about 3 days. Now it's time to add 1/4 mile to whatever you're doing. Do that for a few days to a week, and add another 1/4. Do this until you're at 2 miles without stopping. Probably sounds like a lot, but I promise you, you'll be doing 2 miles without stopping in 3 weeks. TRUST ME!
    - Don't run the day before your test, but do get out and walk a mile or so. On test day, don't overdue it at the beginning. This is crucial. Most try and kill the first lap to get off to a good start and blow their load. Take it easy. Your adrenaline will be going any way, so you almost have to force yourself to slow down. If possible, have someone tell you your time after a lap. Increase a little bit on laps 2 through 4. If you're like me, laps 4 and half of 5 are really hard. But I promise you, once you hit your last lap, you'll have so much energy. Remember, you've been training for 2 miles. This is the money lap. Once you're half way around, GIVE IT ALL YOU GOT. FULL MAMBA MODE!
    - When you pass, remember these instructions and buy me a beer.

Thanks man. That sounds like good advice John.

I think I will try it your way.

I don't like adding to this thread, but this is making the rounds.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/video-shows-tulsa-man-had-hands-police-shooting-061024866.html

It's kind of a tough situation. People are saying he was sort of walking around incoherently and he reached into his car when he was being instructed not to do it. At the same time this seems like a taser situation. (the male cop did use the taser and the female cop shot him practically at the same time)

How do you handle this situation if you're a cop? I mean, cops who had zero racial motivations before are likely feeling threatened right now due to all the cop killings. How can we even know at this point who is racist and who is just downright afraid? You are a brave man Barnes for joining the force when you are.

It was awhile ago, but last time an officer "waited" to see what a person was getting out of the car, it ended up being a rifle and the officer lost the gun battle and died...

I haven't seen the video, so I can't say anything about it. But for me, I don't have a taser (dept doesn't have enough money to give us all tasers), if my subject was not listening to my commands and instead reached into the car, while performing a felony stop of some sort (gun pointed), I'd honestly shoot him... He's putting himself in that situation, not me, by not listening to commands.... What's the back story to this? Why did they pull him over in the first place?

Apparently Connecticut has some of the toughest tests both physical and written in the country. Both of my friends failed these multiple times, so I'm not worried. I got my eye on the prize

I honestly can't see what he's doing. I thought he was just trying (unsuccessfully) to open his door when she shot him. If that were the case, there are 5 officers there, and they didn't need to shoot him, but if he did actually go into his car window, I understand the shooting. But I can't tell from the video I've seen.

I should clarify about that shooting, I can't tell what he was doing at his truck. It looked like he was trying to open the door to get inside, but I'm not sure. But two things were definitely disturbing about it regardless of what he was doing at his truck:

    1. The officer in the helicopter saying "He looks like a bad dude. He might be on something". From up there, what can you see that makes him look like a bad dude other than being a big guy and black?

    2. Not one of the officers tried to render medical aid, or stop his bleeding for like 3 minutes. How do they shoot someone and just leave them on the ground without even trying to make sure he doesn't die?

I agree that both points are a little concerning. I thought once cops take down the suspect and "neutralize" him they are supposed to try to help him. I can't really tell either what he's doing at the car. But even if he was trying to open the door to get inside, I think the cops were telling him not to which means it's not much different than if he's reaching into the car. Either way can end with a gun in his hands. I guess this car stalled out and was in the middle of the road. What was he saying or doing that had 5 cops with multiple weapons drawn on him? Something has to have spooked them other than skin color. There was also a helicopter in the area. Something had to be going down or he had to say something to warrant 5 cops being on the scene with a chopper overhead.

Why is it so hard to obey? Police tells you to stop, STOP. Is it lack of education or innate stubbornness.

Well, what also has me confused was what he was doing before he had his hands up walking back to the car. What's the story there?

He was already near the police car. If they had questions, why didn't they cuff him first? Did they know he was unarmed at the time he was walking back to the car enough to take him down before shooting?

Too many unanswered questions here to back any side. Either way, this is happening too often for it to be normal.
