Fair enough. I just didn't want people reading your comment and thinking that is what I meant. I was talking in terms of this thread and the climate the country is currently in. So I thought it would be obvious I was speaking in larger terms that this could have been really bad had that gun fired off on a minority.

To be completely honest to me, maybe it's just me too, that you felt white folks would handle this news calmly while minorities wouldn't.

Kind of what I thought at first, then I thought he probably didn't mean it like that

Like I said I don't think he means it that way either, but I can guarantee most folks I know would interpret it that way.

No, no, no. I was referring to the climate the way it is that if they would have pulled a minority randomly out of the crowd and that happened, there would have been no way it would have been accepted as the tragic accident it was by some people. Because there have been so many of these excessive force cases lately, it would have escalated very, very quickly.

    MY BAD lol.

Just to reiterate I don't think Savory is some racist and I think that if you know him that he is not communicating that he thinks that minorities riot where whites wouldn't. Rather he was saying that we have a cultural climate that is permanently 2 steps away from exploding. I think that part of the process of talking through this kind of issues is learning to communicate with each other when we all have such different perspectives.

It's real and nothing's changed in Baltimore.

At one point, Michael Woods was talking about an old Baltimore police plan his department found from the 1970s in a basement under the department or something (if I remember correctly) and it was the exact same plan they were doing currently with the same problems, and the same ethnic zoning.

Still don't know all the specifics, but if the man was armed...

    http://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...hed-torched-after-police-kill-suspect-n630236

Here's a question. The article talks about them not knowing if the dude faced the cop with the gun. There may be a body cam to show it. But I guess this is for davriver, at what point is the shooting of an armed man justified? If he's resisting arrest and running, has his gun drawn, but not really pointing it at anyone, is it OK to shoot him? I really don't know. I can see both sides to the argument that he is not threatening the cop, but at the same time the situation can turn bad in less than one second if he turns around. Also if he runs into another person he can kill them. What is protocol in this situation for let's say he is running away with his back turned, but the gun is drawn and in the scenario if the gun is holstered?

All departments have their own policies regarding the use of force, and the use of deadly force. But for the most part, most policies at almost all departments use the tenants of Tennessee V Garner when it comes to deadly force.

This is where people have issues when it comes to deadly force.

"the officer has probable cause to believe that the suspect poses a significant threat of death or serious physical injury to the officer or others."

I hate when citizens, who have no training in police tactics or even know how to react to situations go on the news and on the internet and say how they (the cops) should've reacted....

Now you asked at what point is the shooting of an armed man justified? And my answer, as vague as it is, is the best I can come up with. It's always at the discretion of the officer at that particular point in time. No one can say what that officer was feeling, or what he saw. If it were me, and the guy had a gun and was running, I'm letting the guy run and we do a block search, but that's not always viable....

There's so many variables its impossible to say what was appropriate or what would've been...

I was talking to a cop a couple weeks ago. He said "until you've been in a fight for your life, you don't know what we go through."

I think the problem with the public is they just don't think the same way as folks in law enforcement. For example someone asked me if I ever thought force would be needed against someone in hand cuffs. In their mind hand cuffed equates to subdued and compliant. I said it depends and was told I support police violence and that I don't believe in human dignity. I then listed off several circumstances, some I have been directly involved in where a person is either handcuffed or partially handcuffed that could easily justify the use of force. Do some police over react, sure. But the reality is that many that are not in or around law enforcement have unfounded preconceived notions on both sides of this issue. Same can be said for the "criminals deserve to be shot" crowd.

There are some big dudes out there. I bet half the roster of any pro football team could kick my a** while being handcuffed.

Well as a younger white Canadian man working in the US frequently in my past I have had guns pointed in my direction twice..... no criminal record to speak of..... The first time I was simply getting pulled over for a simple traffic violation in Cincinnati Ohio for speeding up on an on-ramp joining a highway (In Ontario Canada where I am from this is how an on-ramp is used, In Ohio you cannot speed up to highway speed until on the highway)..... right of the bat 2 police officers came up either side of my car with their guns drawn.......I reacted with putting both my hands straight on to my steering wheel until the police approached and could have a conversation as to what was going on. Now nothing happened and after explaining to the officer that I was from Ontario and did not know about that specific rule and it being different where I was from I was let go with a simple warning and told to be safe.....

That experience was eye opening for me...... never have I had a gun(s) drawn on me in Canada by our local police in any city for a simple traffic violation. My point in saying this is not to judge but Imo if you go into any situation with guns drawn as such you automatically increase the odds of something bad happening. I get that there are different gun rights in the US that potentially make each scenario a bit more dangerous for the officers involved..... but at the same time treating each situation as though they are expecting the worse can cause panic and that scenario happening in the first place.... sort of like a self fulfilling prophecy........

There seems to be an increase and change in which police go into any scenario, no matter what it is......... this has happened since 9/11 and the patriot act amongst other changes to policies...... I do believe the very thing they are trying to avoid they are increasing the odds of based on how they approach scenarios these days..... just an opinion.
