This almost made me shed a tear while I was at work today.

 

My thesis concerns the Royal Charters of the King Guy De Lusignan and Conrad de Montferrat (who was king for a brief period). Charters are issued by every king and those document are often "seemingly mundane," as I call them. But in October 1187 when Saladin conquered Jerusalem from the Christians, a power struggle ensued between Guy and the soon to be named king Conrad. It was a "game of thrones" for the Kingdom of Jerusalem while the capital city, Jerusalem, was in "Saracen" control. Most historians have poured over both Christian and Arab chronicles of the time period but few have based their studies on purely Royal Charters and none have based their research on that of Hans E. Mayer whose 40-60 years worth of life work was transcribing (in Latin) and annotating (in German) all the Royal Charters of the Kings of Jerusalem through four volumes in The documents of the Latin kings of Jerusalem: Diplomata regum Latinorum Jerosolimorum. So, I am taking the historical documents from 1187-1192 and translating them into English (largely for the first time - according to my professor) and arguing against historians like the famous Steven Runciman who argues the Kingdom of Jerusalem fell in 1187 giving way to the Kingdom of Acre. I believe the charters, which constitute the King's will, argue that both men were trying to keep Jerusalem alive through their legal actions. The charters have not been explored often enough by crusade historians. If any, some will select key ones, but not the group as a whole.

I currently have a literal translation done. I need to put those into "good English" and write an 80-120 page paper on my findings. Its finding time to fit those translations into "good English" and complete the work that is satisfactory to the chair of the university that is troublesome. We've had a falling out. I am supposed to move to my girlfriend across the country by the end of the year. In all honesty, her and I are REALLY struggling being apart, in a long term relationship while she starts her PhD and I finish my MA degrees.

Needless to say, I am overwhelmed.

That's way more than either of you probably wanted to know but it is what's on my mind. Considering my gf, and honestly the love of my life, is considering dropping the PhD program and joining the USMC ... who knows where I may be moving to. As of a week ago I was moving to Indiana ... now it could be Virginia, Washington, Indiana ... or staying in California.

Honestly, I am struggling to finish school as my thesis committee chair and I are butting heads to much. I've lost my drive for school. Again, way more than either of you needed to know, but there it all is.

I am totally overwhelmed.

 

I literally couldn't breathe after watching this.
