Great fight. Those 2 are always entertaining. I'm a Diaz Bros fan, but thought McGregor won. Close, but those early knock downs and the face that only Freddie Krueger can appreciate was too much for me to ignore. Thought Diaz had him at the end of the 2nd and 3rd, but then McGregor got his 2nd wind.
I think McGregor owns him at 155, but stepping up 25 lbs in the fight game is no joke. Diaz is one tough SOB though, and I wouldn't be surprised if he needs plastic surgery if those two do it again. Nasty cuts. on another note.... I'm so mean.
^^^ In case anyone's interested and didn't see the fight, that's "exactly" what Diaz's face looked like. And a lot of it was all over McGregor.
That went more or less how I thought, but I always underestimate the stupidly courageous face of Diaz. That man is not going to have an easy life after fighting. McGregor is almost fighting at a handicap up at this weight. He's strong enough to hurt Diaz, but not quite strong enough to knock him out completely. Meanwhile Diaz's length and size lets him get big shots in on McGregor while Diaz eats punches. I thought Diaz handily won the 3rd and 4th round where he was able to keep McGregor off balance and McGregor went away from those leg kicks that were destructive. I know most people have 2nd going easy to Diaz because he stung McGregor at the end, but I thought it was actually close. McGregor controlled the round easily right up until the tag. I don't mind that round swinging either way. I'm definitely down for another fight. McGregor is a better fighter, but Diaz can take an unbelievable punishing.
According to Dana White, there will be no McGregor / Diaz 3. Of course, Dana is on his way out and everyone want to see the rubber match, so I think it'll happen one day. But, McGregor holds the cards now. He went up and now that he's won, will make Diaz come down to him. Huge advantage for McGregor. No matter the outcome, this will be a big payday for both fighters. Speaking of $$$. McGregor earned $3 million for the fight. Mayweather gets triple that.... per round. Something has to change, because the UFC is a cash cow and everyone is getting paid, except the fighters.
The gate was 7 mil, but I wonder how much they made in pay-per-view. With the new owners just spending $4 billion to buy the business, I'm sure they will try to keep purses reasonable for as long as possible. It's not like 3 million is chump change LOL, but most earn anywhere near that.
That GIF is amazing. I was under the impression they'll definitely do a 3rd fight, but I think they're going to make Connor either defend, or vacate, his FW belt before they talk about a trilogy fight. They can't keep holding up the FW division, it's not fair. I'm also not a fan of McGregor saying Aldo doesn't deserve the rematch. I think he clearly deserves a rematch, and I find it hypocritical of McGregor to not give it to him, after all the crying he did to get the Diaz rematch. If McGregor just vacates that belt without ever defending it, I think an argument could be made that he won the belt with a lucky punch and then ran away from Aldo and Edgar.
I think there is a pronounced difference between beating dominating a fight for the first round, then gassing and getting subbed while fighting up 25 lbs after training for a 155lbs fight, and getting KOed in the opening moments of a title fight you have been training for. Now I totally agree that Aldo deserves the rematch as he has dominated the division since before its inception. But Conner lost in a very different way.
Aldo fought once since McGregor and won right? I think he deserves a rematch for sure, but I'm not sure the overall outcome will change. I think McGregor still wins. McGregor at 155 also beats Diaz again. I think the plan now should be for McGregor to defend his FW title and then after that we get Diaz 3 with Diaz down at 155. If McGregor wins his title defense, he has good mojo going into Diaz 3 and if he loses the title match, he's got a fight or two to work back up to the title again. Win-win.
Holy crap are the divisions in UFC different from Boxing, that McGregor could pop down to "Featherweight" and then back up to whatever 155lbs is?
UFC weight classes are actually more accurate to today's standard than boxing. UFC weight classes for men are: Strawweight- 115 Flyweight- 125 Bantamweight- 135 Featherweight- 145 Lightweight- 155 Welterweight- 170 Middleweight- 185 Light heavyweight- 205 Heavyweight- 265 Super Heavyweight- Anything else
It's just a different sport, and on top of that I don't think boxers cut weight in the extreme way that's some MMA guys do. McGregor is currently the 145 aka featherweight king. Reality is he won't be able to make that cut as he gets older so he was going to fight the 155lb champ but due to injury he fought Nate Diaz at 170 on just a few days notice and despite dominating the first round gassed and was tapped in the second. The rematch was at 170 again and Conner inked out the decision. If there is a third, which $$$$ says there will be I bet they make Nate drop to 155, where he has fought before.
