Oh, by the way, this is the same had that DeMarcus Cousins, the notoriously bad personality bought into; he loved Mike and by all reports was hurt when he got fired. Point? If he could get DeMarcus to buy in, he'd probably get our players to buy into what he's preaching, too.

I though about all the replies in the back and forth that I was having with @Real and made a bullet point list of the stuff I think Byron has done wrong, IMO. A couple of upgraded assistants, though, and maybe we can see some improvement/adapation in these areas...

    -Mismanagement of Kobe's minutes.
    -Playing Ronnie Price big minutes.
    -Underutilization of Lin.
    -Underutilization of Davis.
-Starting Boozer & Hill together, as an ineffective defensive pairing.
-Rarely playing one of the more productive PnR roll men in the league in terms of PPP (Davis) with one of the more productive PnR guards (Lin).
-The idea of 10 threes per game.
-Pindown screens that are designed to get mid range jumpers.
-Closed posts that prevent driving lanes for guards.
-Limited utilization of bigs in the short corner on guard penetration.
-No counters to the pin downs.
-Extending ball pressure 35 feet up court.
-Overhedging with bigs, further exacerbating our defense being stretched too thin.
-No counter/slip screen opportunities in offense.
-Putting Joran Hill 20 feet from the basket instead of in a position to get O-Rebs.
    - Out of bounds plays that only diagram how to get someone the ball near the half court line for an isolation.
    - Clock and foul management
    - Robo-subs
    - Offense defense subs or lack thereof that make no sense
    - Saying that benching is the only enforcement tool that a coach has, and then telling players that their jobs are safe for at least 20 games
    - Giving certain players free passes no matter what they do
    - Not being able to process which lineups actually do better
    - Making a point at the beginning about how important it was to set the PnR defensive coverage in stone for the season, and then tinkering with it all year
    - Not communicating with players behind closed doors and then taking shots at them to the media
    - Letting players think that no shot is a bad shot
    - Making the team play a slower pace, when it's obvious that they're much much better when they push the pace

Thoughts are w/t Scott family, as Byron's mom, Dorothy, passed away last Sunday. Scott will miss games at OKC/MIN to attend her funeral.

So, I'm guessing that Scott coaches tonight and then misses the next two games.

The Lakers have rarely done that amid key season-ending injuries to Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash and Julius Randle. But Scott told Los Angeles News Group he met last week with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak, who provided an encouraging message.

“He said I’ve been doing a great job in getting all these guys to play hard every night,” Scott said. “With all the injuries that we’ve had and to be in the games that we’ve been in, he thinks I’ve done a terrific job.”

Scott also said Kupchak reiterated what he and executive Jim Buss stressed during last year’s coaching interviews. Then, Scott reported the Lakers’ front office conceded a possible lengthy rebuilding process that they would address in the 2015 offseason through the NBA Draft in late June and free agency in July.

“We’re still on the right course and still sticking to what we talked about,” Scott said. “All of the things we talked about before they hired me and all the things we talked about since they hired me hasn’t changed.”

The Lakers could have as many as two first- and second-round picks. They will also have enough cap space to sign a marquee free agent to a maximum-caliber contract.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia has featured 14 undrafted players on its roster. The Sixers could own as many as four first-round picks and five second-round selections. Philadelphia even traded 2014 Rookie of the Year Michael Carter Williams in a three-team deal with Milwaukee in exchange for the first-round pick the Lakers owe Phoenix.

Scott joked he “would like an eight-year contract” if he coached under those circumstances. Scott does not need to worry about the security about his four-year, $17 million deal with the Lakers.

“Mitch asked, ‘Are you OK?’ I said, ‘Mitch I’m all right.’” Scott said. “I take it hard that day and that night (when we lose). The next day I wake up and have a whole different perspective. I go by the next day and get happy with everything we‘ve been able to do with the guys on a day-to-day basis and just keep pushing.”

I loved the bolded and one of the reasons I love this organization; from Mitch having weekly breakfast with Nash, petitioning the NBA to keep treating X. Henry after we cut him, and I believe Mitch asking out of genuine concern if Scott is okay coaching a 50 loss team in a city that is so accustomed to winning in a major market in a city that loves their Lakers; tough, tough job.

NEW YORK — His first season here with the former New Jersey Nets just ended nearly 14 years ago, a 26-52 record prompting Byron Scott to make one understandable conclusion.

“We needed to make a bunch of changes,” Scott said. “We need to get some guys in here to play the type of style that I wanted to play and that were dedicated to winning.”

It did not take long for Scott to receive his wish. The Nets traded star guard Stephon Marbury to the Phoenix Suns for another star guard Jason Kidd in the 2001 offseason, a deal that excited Scott so much that he recalled joking to former president Rod Thorn that he would drive to Phoenix just to pick Kidd up.

Scott recently characterized his relationship with Kidd as “cordial” and described his reputation with an expletive amid his suspicion that he influenced Scott’s firing following the 2003-04 season. But Kidd’s presence, coupled with Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles and three first-round draft picks accelerated the Nets’ rebuilding process. They went from 26-56 in the season 2000-01 to a 52-30 record the following year. The Nets also made two consecutive NBA Finals appearances.

The Lakers (19-52) enter Sunday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets (31-40) at Barclays Center only three losses away from tying last year’s worst record in L.A. franchise history.

    And yet….

“The turnaround can be just as quickly here as it was in New Jersey,” Scott said. “But obviously you have to hit a home run in the free agent market and with your draft pick. We have the capability of doing that.”

The Lakers could have as many as four draft picks, both in the first and second round. The Lakers will also have enough cap space to sign one marquee free agent at a max-level contract, possible candidates including Memphis’ Marc Gasol, Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge, Cleveland’s Kevin Love, Miami’s Goran Dragic and Dallas’ Rajon Rondo.

But the Lakers will owe a first-round pick to Philadelphia as part of the Steve Nash trade with Phoenix unless it lands in the top five. The Lakers could not sign LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony last summer. Both Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol also left in consecutive offseasons without the Lakers receiving anything in return.

But Scott called those developments the “past” and exuded optimism beyond the Lakers’ usual talking points about their 16 NBA championships.

“You have a lot of free agents out there who would love to play for us. They’ve been making it pretty clear,” Scott said. “You have guys during the games come by the bench saying, ‘Hey Coach, I would love to be in L.A. next year.’ That makes you feel good there are players out there that want to be here. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that we’re taking it in a different direction. They know this organization and the history of the organization is going to be back.”

Scott would not name any candidates because of tampering rules. Nor would Scott disclose how many potential free agents expressed those sentiments to him during games. But the direct and indirect feedback from those players prompted Scott to express confidence.

“I’m a very positive person,” Scott said. “I think we’re going to have a real good summer. That’s just me. I always look at the glass half full over half empty with being in L,A. and the history of this organization and the tradition that we have. We have a lot of things going for us. I think we’re going to do well this summer.”

Scott also described the Lakers’ draft acquisition last season with Jordan Clarkson as a “home run.’ He also predicted Lakers forward Julius Randle is “going to be a great player” after playing only one game his rookie season before suffering a season-ending right leg injury.

Add it all up, and Scott said, “I don’t think we have to make as many changes as we did in Jersey.” Yet, he understood the uncertainty with what the Lakers face.

“Obviously the one or two big free agents you can get, you’ll have to sprinkle in some other guys that fill the roster that help you win as well. If you can hit a couple of doubles, that wouldn’t hurt,” Scott said. “But if we can hit a couple of home runs in free agency and the draft, we’ll be on our way again.”

Middleton in FA. Okafor and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson in the draft. Resign Ed Davis, Ellington and Lin to team friendly deals. To me, that's a home run offseason. Not Dragic or Rondo or Love.

I take heart in Byron's comment that, “But obviously you have to hit a home run in the free agent market and with your draft pick. We have the capability of doing that.” I doubt he is talking about the 3 other Lakers' potential picks. He's talking about the main Top 5 pick. Good damn drilling "bit" got through his skull and let true awareness of Lakers' situation pour on through. Good job against Nets, Brian. [IMG] Jabari gets valuable time and anyone else you wanted to look at for next year. You know what the vets can do by now for chrissakes.

As long as he keeps the chance of 1 guy winning the game on his own to a minimum and makes in game adjustments as necessary [IMG] that is OK. I LOVED the flow of this game in "Bizarro" Lakers season. We were comfortably behind all game against the Nets and could actually root for our young guys when they did "good". And not freak about Hill doing "good".

Just read a couple classics quotes from B. Scott on N. Young:

Coach Byron Scott said Nick Young "has to grow as a B-ball player if he wants to continue to play in this league for a long time."

"There's no telling what we're going to do this year in the free agent market," Scott said. "But if we get the guys we want then [Young] has got a challenge next year on his hands, as far as being in that rotation and playing consistent minutes."

--Honestly, I'm not too bothered by either of these. The second one sounds good, actually; the first one sounds like it's not presented in the most sensible terms, but it's fine.

"Scott hasn't been very nice to Swaggy. Last month, he called Young's haircut 'a lost bet' and that it "looks like a bunch of worms up there.'"
    :fubar:

That's from Twitter by way of Rotoworld.com.

Byron is just calling it like it is. If swaggy was smart he would listen.

Wow it's not here yet. Am on cell first chance since early morning to come in.
Yahoo has some pretty antagonistic new comments from Byron, like not wanting to be in a foxhole with certain unnamed players. I don't get this at all. He has to tank by way of his lineups and playing time. Has to be clear by now to all of them. How the eff can he turn around and call out any of them for effort or (not having his back in a fight). He really seems to be jumping the shark with very simplistic and hypocritical and more importantly "uneccessary" mind games. Someone will link this now probably before I get a chance.
