lakers should offer Houston's 1st plus hill. if only to drive the price up for competitors. having dragic's bird rights would also help this summer.

as it stands, Houston's probably going to walk away with him for very little if someone else doesn't step in.

naaah. everybody has learned from the Howard debacle, we should too, because it was us he left. The lesson is never trade draft picks and other assets for an unrestricted free agent in his last year of contract.

^ I would consider it, because the Dwightmare had a lot to do with his attitude which was already bad coming into the situation with us. But definitely a no to this, because we need that top 5 pick badly. If we traded Houston's 1st and Jordan Hill for him, we might not get the top 5 pick because our record improved, and Phoenix would also get that pick so they'd walk away from that trade mobbin'.

Dwight is the exception that proves the rule. and he's a drooling moron. given his injury issues, he may have left 25+ million on the table, not to mention things he could have done off the court. but hey, fun...

anyway, get the bird rights. no way you can snag dragic in FA without them, imo. especially if some other team (Houston) trades something for him in the next couple of weeks.

I'm tired of players who don't want to be Lakers. So I'd rather have FAs signing on their own volition than trading for them and overpaying to make them stay.

Not sure if I want to trade for him, yes we will have his bird rights that will really help but then we will also be better and might lose that top 5 pick. Would hate for some team to get him for a first round draft pick and a bag of chips though.

dragic isn't so good that he can will this bunch to victory, but yes, I suppose it could knock them down a peg or two.

is it possible to re-negotiate the protection on that pick as part of the deal?

I'd definitely trade the Houston 1st for him. We're not going to get a player so good at that spot that it's worth MORE than Dragic's Bird Rights. I'd have to have a conversation though and make sure we've got a 99% chance at re-signing him this summer...

Houston's pick is going to be way at the end of the 1st round. I probably would offer it for Dragic. That late in the draft we probably get another role player that will fight for time and need to develop. I can't say we really need that since we have Young, Clarkson, Kelly, and Black, and if we're able to hang onto Ellington and Davis. If we keep the pick and use it, great, but if we traded it for Dragic I probably wouldn't care. That is, if we get that top 5 pick.

bingo. I think dragic's bird rights and a chance to sell him for a while is worth more than the 26th pick in the draft.

Great point from Ireland today on 710 though: if you trade for Dragic and he gets you 5 more wins, you lose the pick to Phoenix. Now you're looking at probably giving up a 6-10 pick and a pick in the late 20s for Dragic's Bird Rights.

    Was it worth it?

^^^ Hmm, so another Phoenix Trojan horse. We trade for him, he helps us win enough to get Phoenix that pick, and he signs back with them in the offseason. Hadn't thought of that. Now I'd be wary, paranoid, and in full on conspiracy mode. If we lost both our draft picks AND he didn't re-sign with us that would be a disaster.

true. nightmare scenario. but remember that the one pick must go to them eventually, and could end up being even higher if the lakers fail again in FA.

could be moot, anyway, as supposedly the asking price is higher than initially reported.

Well next year is Top 3 protected. If we are in this position for another year FO changes are coming. We can't be bottom dwellers three years running.

for us to trade for him, we would have to let him in on the plan. JC will continue to get the start for development purposes. Dragic would get 20 min a night off the bench to begin to learn Scott's plays. sell him on the culture, vision, and team. Tell him if he wants someone to pass the ball to going forward, we HAVE to get that pick.

I like the Trojan horse metaphor but in the story, Trojan head of security was really incompetent, kind of reminds me of the Lakers FO :lol
