I honestly think it's Disney stepping in and putting a hold on their trilogy. Rian Johnson hinted that Lucasfilm is still trying to figure things out and he doesn't know when his trilogy will happen, if it does. I think they are waiting to see how Rise of Skywalker does. If it fails to crack one billion, (it should be knocking on the door of 2 billion with it being the culmination of the Skywalker saga) my guess is they will clean house and whoever replaced Kathleen Kennedy will not want to step in and have a couple trilogies by..."controversial" filmmakers to squeeze into their new vision. Benioff and Weiss probably decided they didn't want to stick around and wait for all that to shake out.

I think all the things you said and more could be the reason for this. They could have realized they want no part of the Star Wars fandom after going into hiding after that awful GOT final season, Disney could be re-directing its plans, movies look like they might be going on a break for TV as they’re going all in on this Disney+ thing to try and take down Netflix. Have you seen the last Mandelorian trailer? Looks friggin amazing, I’m gonna be set with TV shows if they’re going to be movie quality.

This is really cool, dude got (And still gets in stuff like YouTube list videos) so much hate for his portrayal of Anakin, it’s cool to see fans embracing him more these days. Likely because those fans grew up with the prequels as their first SW, but still, I feel like a lot of older folks have come around too, and Episode 3 has been my 3rd or so favorite SW film since it came out, and I still prefer it to any of the sequels.

Revenge of the Sith is criminally underrated. It gets lumped into the prequel hate when it clearly is an excellent movie. Heartbreaking and inspiring at the end.

This is a good read, and a frustrating one. I wasn’t really bummed about their exit, but hearing they were going to explore the origins of the Jedi, now I am, and we better get it from someone else at some point.

Disney playing it safe and making directors and writers toe the company line is getting old, and it’s stifling creativity. I enjoy the sequels because it’s Star Wars, but I do find TFA to be very safe and boring as a whole, and I don’t really watch it anymore. TLJ for all its divisiveness, at the very least is a different take on things and feels like no other saga film, it’s not predictable. I fear we’re going to get predictable with 9 again in ways, a lot of ROTJ beats, Kylo probably redeemed instead of going out the villain he deserves too, stuff like that. I honestly can’t wait until Kennedy and Iger are gone, Kennedy clearly doesn’t know what SW fans truly want or have love for SW lore, and is all about the bottom line and playing it safe, and Iger is just a businessman. Star Wars needs a Feige, whether that’s Filoni or someone like him (though he’d have my vote), someone passionate about the lore, someone not afraid to take chances like Feige wasn’t with a film like Guardians of the Galaxy, someone willing to dip into legends material and rework it (Filoni again), just not Kennedy. Filoni and Hidalgo together for all I care, but SW needs to start expanding beyond the safe stuff and the characters we know. Even Mandelorian as awesome as it looks is a Boba Fett looking character involved with the empire and stormtroopers, we’ve seen it. I want old republic stuff, I want stuff with absolutely zero characters or places we’ve ever seen before, thousands of years in the past, or the future, whatever.

Kathleen Kennedy is a fantastic producer...but she had Spielberg carrying the load in the creative department. They are completely different skill sets. Being the gate keeper of creative with an IP like Star Wars? Let's also not forget that she was never a producer on Star Wars. She never had anything to do with Star Wars. She was Spielberg's right hand woman and knew George because of their work together on Indiana Jones.

Part of Kennedy's problem is she wanted to go after a new demographic and believed the Star Wars faithful would fall in line. That's fine, and I liked Jyn Erso, and while Rey seemed strangely overpowered in TFA, I was fine with her. Then she started butchering older characters to get the new characters over. Luke basically jobbed (wrestling term) to Rey so Rey could get over and be the new face of good in the Star Wars Universe. Don't go after a new demographic while alienating the one you paid 4 billion dollars for. Because let's be real, Disney didn't pay 4 billion dollars so they could swing laser swords around and film it. They paid 4 billion for the hardcore Star Wars fan that will pay them hundreds of dollars to watch them swing laser swords around when they film it. If you bought a successful sports bar, would you suddenly start playing a Twilight marathon on NFL Sunday instead of the games and serve soy based chicken wings? Know your core audience. Serve them first and try to build a new audience along the way.

I agree with you Weezy on where in the timeline these movies should have been. If you were going to make a sequel to the Original Trilogy, make it a sequel and make it about the characters in the original trilogy. I mean, JJ is saying the reason they are bringing back the Emperor is because this is a 9 part story and the villain should be consistent throughout. Doesn't that logic mean Luke, Han and Leia should not get systematically killed off one by one? How did we not get ONE FREAKING SHOT of Luke, Leia and Han together? Make this trilogy about Luke, Han and Leia. Introduce a new set of heroes, but don't center things on them. But like you said Weezy, it'd be better to make it so far in the future you don't even mess with the character's legacies. Or make it so far in the past it doesn't even matter what happens.

Regardless, Kathleen Kennedy was never in charge of a studio. She was never in charge of keeping a long, coherent story running smoothly and consistently. She was responsible for making sure a production ran smoothly (she evidently forgot how to do that as well :D) on a single film. Filoni should have been in charge of creative. The dude was in charge of more Star Wars story development than anybody (including George) with his long run on Clone Wars. While I don't think Filoni would have been perfect and had 100% of the fanbase united, he certainly would have kept it inline and kept it consistent with previous movies.

Haven’t watched The Mandalorian yet, but I’m excited to in a bit, can’t believe it’s finally here. Some other weird Disney+ news, they changed the Han/Greedo scene in ANH again. :D

I also came across an article about Mark Hamill’s goodbye to Anthony Daniels when he wrapped TROS, thought it was worth sharing

I agree with Hamill on this one, seeing Luke and 3PO and R2D2 apart took a little something away for me, and seeing those droids reduced to background decoration really, did bug me as well. Instead of trying to sell toys with BB-8 they really should have left those 2 as the heart of the movies. I can’t believe the original script didn’t even have Luke acknowledge 3PO either, Disney baffles me sometimes with their cluelessness in regard to stuff like that.

Watched episode 1 of the Mandalorian, loved it. Started a little slow, but was still beautiful to look at, and when Nick Nolte’s character showed up I was in. The laughs started, and it only got more awesome from there, the IG droid bounty hunter was so fun. The end left me wanting to see the next one right away, and I had a big smile from the Star Wars feels. I have spoken.

You'll join our side soon enough. It's just taking you a little longer. But I have faith the dark side hasn't overtaken you completely. I sense the light in you Weezy. ;)

The fact that Ruin Johnson didn't have that in the script is proof positive that the current regime doesn't understand Star Wars. There's times I honestly wonder if they even watched Star Wars growing up. How do we not get a shot of all three of the original cast together? Why do we get a scene for Rose Tico (one of the most pointless characters in film history) to mourn her sister (a character we knew for all of 30 seconds), but the scene of Luke freaking Skywalker mourning Han freaking Solo was cut? Leia walks past Chewbacca, her dead husband's best friend, in order to hug the precious Plank of wood...err....Rey? There are several other scenes that show they have zero sense of what makes Star Wars precious to the hardcore fans. As you said C3P0 and R2D2 are peas and carrots. They should not be separated, and if they are, it should be part of the narrative arc that they are trying to get back to each other.

All that being said, Mandalorian looks sweet and I will watch the first episode when I get off work. But it looks like Star Wars. From what I've read, it feels like the old Star Wars. Why? Because Dave Filoni is a Star Wars superfan. John Favreau obviously loves Star Wars. KK, Ruin and even JJ say they are fans, but watching the original trilogy a couple times and enjoying it doesn't make you a fan. It makes you a casual fan of action movies in general maybe. But they obviously don't get it.

I don’t want to hype up Madalorian, it’s one episode of a whole series, and it very much feels that way. It’s only like 36 mins long, I wanted more immediately, but I liked that I can’t binge it and I have to wait for more actually. I will say, it very much feels like a tv show, it feels a lot like the best of the Filoni Clone Wars series, expanded lore, that Star Wars world feel, but for me it has a feel unlike any Star Wars I’ve ever seen. It feels like this is more of the future of SW than maybe even than movies, it feels natural, it makes me want to come back to this world for more episodes, it’s a totally different feel than an epic movie, and it’s not silly like a “kids” SW cartoon, it’s this happy medium that looks as good as a movie, but feels like something entirely new. What this one does for me though, is hype up the Kenobi series in my mind even more. Watching this I could picture Ewan walking around in this SW world again for 6 episodes and it just being fantastic.

So I watched the first episode of the Mandalorian. It was very...meh. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't interesting either. The last scene raised some intrigue, but the rest of the episode was a little predictable. I didn't feel any real Star Wars lore from it. The characters looked Star Wars-y, but I didn't really feel like I was in a post-Empire world. I realize it's the first episode, but they need to be a little more aggressive with the story telling.

Sums up my feelings after watching the first episode perfectly. Just meh. I will give the second a shot but if it isn't A LOT better, there's no way I'm continuing to watch the rest.

I really enjoyed the first episode. It was better than either of the last two main story movies. I don't get why it wasn't interesting to you guys. The whole bounty hunter thing is interesting. The interaction with Nolte's character was great. The droid was great. Now with the ending there's a good set up for an ongoing storyline, and the last scene nailed the cold bounty hunter with a soft spot in his heart thing.

Episode 2 was even better. Also some good easter eggs from Indiana Jones, Batman the TV series, and an early Star Wars game on Nintendo.

I liked episode two better than one. Something I'm noticing, the short run times, the small action sequences followed by a little dialogue, followed by a small action sequence...and so on and so forth....feels like an episode of The Clone Wars. The pacing, the timing...both episodes feel like a live action Clone Wars episode (I realize Filoni is heavily involved). I love the Clone Wars, don't get me wrong, but I think that's where I'm hesitant to be completely onboard with this. We were promised prestige, appointment television, and so far it feels very serial cartoonish. Not with the themes necessarily, but just the pacing and plot development.

I’m loving the show. It’s not what I expected at all so far, I thought it might be over the top a little, but instead it’s way more restrained, quiet, it really is a serial western. Loved episode 2, the Jawas, the Mandalorian finding his way, absolutely some Indiana Jones and Super Star Wars homages, and I’m absolutely fascinated as to what the lore of “the asset” is leading us to. Someone on a site I was reading did the math, and if it’s correct the asset was born at the same time as Anakin, which they didn’t feel was a coincidence at all. My only complaint would be that I want more, 27 minutes is not enough, I was hoping if these weren’t going to be an hour long that they’d at least be like 40-45 mins.

I think the pilot did, but Filoni directed that one and it very much felt like a pilot episode, a proof of concept. I think episode 2 felt like no Star Wars I’ve ever seen, a totally new thing. I love Clone Wars, hell I love Rebels, but they feel very kiddy at times. This one feels different to me, the pace is even slower than one of those shows and there’s long periods of no dialogue, the visuals do the storytelling, it’s very cool. I can see some similarities to some later Rebels episodes that were slower and delved into lore though, maybe some of the Yoda Clone wars final season episodes. I can’t wait for the rest though, I like that it’s weekly and I can’t have binged it already because I look forward to each one.
