Most people who didn't like the movie, thought it was a rehash of episodes 4-6:

I really only have two gripes. One being the "Death Star pt.2" and the other one was the confusion regarding the Resistence and the New Republic.

Not only did he build it despite not being completely trained, but he has a crystal that is cracked, which is why the blade is so raw and volatile. It works on a symbolic level too, as it reflects his volatile personality.

I think Kylo joined the dark side before Luke had ever even given him a lightsaber. Maybe that's part of the reason why he betrayed Luke. He was impatient with Luke's training or maybe Luke adopted a completely pacifist ideology where he didn't want his students learning to fight with lightsabers at all. So Kylo gets pissed off and ends up making a lightsaber on his own and uses it to slaughter Luke's academy and join Snoke. But in secretly making the lightsaber on his own without anyone who can help, he wings it and so it ends up being rough and unstable, mirroring his personality. This would also help explain why Rey was able to beat him pretty easily with no experience; Kylo also didn't really have any experience. If you think about it, Kylo has pretty much been the only Jedi in the galaxy after Luke goes into exile. In that time, he hasn't been trained. He's just been using the "easy" and "seductive" force powers of the dark side to lead the First Order through fear. He uses his lightsaber pretty much just as a tool for intimidation. It's almost just as much for aesthetics as his mask. It's all a facade, and Rey cut right through that. But what makes him interesting is that through all that, he's clearly still very powerful just unpolished. I hope he's already been trained and well on his way to being more of a badass in Episode VIII.

I'm actually glad they killed off Han instead of Leia. Because obviously, everyone likes Han more. So if they killed Leia, it would have felt like they wanted to have a dramatic death but didn't have the balls to do it to the character that would make a bigger impact. Plus, if Han were still alive, he'd probably have to be a big part of the plot going forward. On the other hand, I can see them have Leia kinda fall into the background from now on giving even more room for the new cast.

I liked the temper fits with the sabers, and the storm troopers walking away.

So ummm... Angry Joe brought this to my attention tonight on Youtube. MASSIVE SPOILER thanks to Disney Infinity 3.0 goof.

Skip to 20:30 of this video to hear what Kylo Ren addresses Rey as

EDIT: apparently Joe's taken his video down due to some clarity issues on Kylo's dialogue. Someone needs to subtitle it (I play Disney Infinity w/ my daughter but don't have 3.0 to confirm). Or can someone with a good headset confirm? Skip to 20:30 or 25:20-ish to hear Kylo.

EDIT 2: the more I loop it, the more it's a false alarm. Sorry folks. My midichlorians just got excited. #IPulledASteveHarvey

So I just got back from seeing it, was not very impressed. Didn't realiy feel like a SW movie to me, felt like some weird hybrid of the originals, prequels, but with the fast pace and jokes of Abrams Star Trek reboot. I won't go into deep details about my gripes, because you're all super high on the movie and I wish I was right there with you and don't want to bring the thread down, but I could write a loooong list of them. I will say I'm looking forward to the next one and where the story goes from here, as this one felt pretty much like al set up for further movies to me. I'll probably see it again to see if if I have a better reaction, but i feel over it right now, it felt like imitation SW, not real SW. At the moment I wouldn't rank this one higher than any of the originals, and I'd have to watch 3 again to see if I'd put it higher than that.

I pretty much agree with everyone here. It has flaws but its still a great movie. There were multiple parts in the movie that just left me smiling. I'm also infatuated with Rey now.

Regarding the light saber duels, in the original trilogy I always thought they were pretty damn bad. In new movie its much much better. There is a raw brutality to the fights instead of a dance like the prequel trilogy.

Not going to try to convince you otherwise, but I had the exact opposite reaction while watching the movie. I was thinking, this is exactly what I think a SW movie should be several times throughout the movie.

Same. To me this movie is easily better than any prequel and probably better than Return of the Jedi. I'd put it for now just below A New Hope.

The thing is, there's a LOT of little plot points that don't make sense. Maybe I'll list them later, but DURING the movie I don't care about any of those points. While I'm watching the movie, it all works and that's exactly what JJ Abrams gives you. When you get out, some of those plot points make you laugh but during the movie I was just enraptured.

Harrison Ford was amazing. The new cast feel real and tangible and I'm heavily invested in their futures already. I loved it.

Yeah there were a ton of plot holes, but the in movie experience for me was twice as enjoyable as any of the prequels.

I still have even RotJ above this one though. In spite of the Ewoks, how can you top Jedi Luke, and the confrontation with Vader and the Emperor?

Because everything else about that movie was just not quite on the mark. The scenes at Jabba's palace were cheesy, Endor had teddy bears. I mean don't get me wrong it's a fun movie, but I have this one above it. That final battle with Luke/Vader/the Emperor really is classic though.

    For me it's: 5, 4,7, 6, 3, 1,

Yeah, RotJ is still my favorite.

Maybe because it came out back when I was old enough to understand it, while the other two I remember, but was way too little to really understand what was going on at the time.

    For me the order is:

    RotJ
    The Force Awakens
    A New Hope
    Empire Strikes Back
    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
    -
All 3 of the turd prequels

Wow! Most people have Empire Strikes Back as not just the best in the series, but one of the greatest sequels of all time in cinema history.

Genuinely curious: how come you like it the least of the really good Star Wars movies?

Don't know. I felt like the whole Cloud City element was a bit out of place, and not in line with the rest of the movie. Just in general I just didn't feel it grab me the way the others did.

Regarding some plot point issues just remember that this is the first in a new saga. A lot of these plot points will be further explained and make better sense as the series goes on. So, its hard to judge the movie in a vacuum by itself, just like it would be weird to point out the unresolved plot points in episode 4 by itself without seeing episodes 5 and 6.

I personally like 7 the most out of all of them. Although this is probably because I never thought the original trilogy was that amazing. They were very good yes, but I never thought they were excellent movies.

For me (and this is obviously the definitive ranking ):

4 - nothing will ever surpass that initial in theater experience of the first one
5 - best actual movie of the series
    6 - force lightning FTW
    7 - more Han & Chewie!

3 - Obi Wan vs. Vader
1 - Qui Gon vs. Jar Jar

    2 - Whiny Anakin
