Well... when Grant Hill is your school's claim to fame - Phil just might be right.

Healthy Grant Hill was a beast. I agree with Phil though :D

Sure was. Next in line, however, is Danny Ferry. Or Elton Brand.

    That's just sad.

Deng, Maggette, Brand, Boozer, Dunleavy and Laettner weren't horrible.

Jaye Williams and Hurley had careers cut short due to injury.

We all know about Grant Hill, who had a fantastic career, despite injuries.

Do they have the success of UNC players? No. But I think Phil is being a little harsh.

seems like sort of a silly point to me. what's the bar? superstar? are there that many programs that have produced multiple superstars?

I mean, he's right in the sense of the schools overall success and players that turn into franchise players.

Hill would have been that player. Okafor is probably the most skilled big to come out of there , so things can change.

In terms of churning out consistent talent, the most recent one is Kentucky. North Carolina had a good spurt in the 80's with Jordan and Worthy. But in general, going to a successful program doesn't always equate to a talented player. Those programs just stack their teams that it's hard for most others to compete.

Battier had a very good career. Most of Duke's players I'd categorize as solid, complementary core players. Hill was the exception.

Jackson may have a point about Okafor's demeanor.

two guys in the 80s? I mean, I suppose Carolina also put out vc and Jamison and stack and Wallace later on. still, I'm not sure there are many teams with a super hit rate if this is how we're going to play. can you justify picking a guy from texas because Aldridge and Durant are perennial allstars? it's just lazy, and I was about to say I'm surprised phil went this way, but I'm beginning to think he's actually in the early stages of senility, and I don't mean that as a joke.

I think he just means it doesn't pump out big players as frequently as you'd think. For a program that's repeatedly touted as one of the nation's finest. I don't think it's a jab, but it's definitely not nice.

If anything, it's a credit to Coach K that he can consistently churn out winners despite them not being the best individual players.

look at UK. They have the top recruiting class, the #1 overall picks in the draft and don't win the title very often (Coach Cal has 1 title, despite coaching about 800 Hall of Famers. LOL)

Yeah, but it wasn't stated as a compliment. That's the problem IMHO.

I agree. I think Phil might be losing it. Or he's just saying that stuff to get his buddy (Rosen) some attention.

I took Phil's comments as being specifically directed toward guys who ended up being worthy of a top 2 - 3 pick. At the time of the interview the Knicks probably thought they were going to be number one. I'm sure Phil was just signalling that he would lean toward Towns with the top pick like pretty much every other expert. Also, this certainly isn't the first time someone has stated this about Duke. So, I don't find anything shocking or surprising about the comment at all.

No s***. Now running his mouth with more not called for verbiage to stir his pot of whatever for whatever reasons. He had to come out with a "feel his hatred" blast about Kobe after all this time and 2 more rings? Why? To make Kobe look again "uncoachable" like was portrayed he that he was for a period in "The Last Season"? No need to bring up this old crap.
