that 04 pistons team held their opponents to 65 pts or less 3 times that playoffs and 70 or less 6 times. just mindblowing

as good as malone was that season i just don't see him being enough to overcome detroit

looked it up. lakers were 35-7 when malone played. in the only game in which he was healthy when we played det in the regular season, we won. we also won game 2, which is when he went down, effectively ending the series.

det was good, but not world-beaters. we beat a very good SA team (that won it the next year, over det), and minnesota's best team ever before playing them, too.

i feel like time has changed the collective memory of those events. maybe for me, too. but i just remember knowing it was over when malone went down, and not thinking that prior.

my wmc: just realized the NO game is nationally televised. zion and company will be looking to show out; while we'll just be playing our like, 90th nationally televised game.

Got to give credit where credit is due. Shaq was heading downwards starting in 04. He was still capable of dominating but he didn't have the same explosiveness to completely move and dunk all over you. Ben Wallace did a great job preventing Shaq from getting the ball. People really forget how awesome Ben was on the defensive end. Our guards were outplayed by Detroit's Prince, RIP, and Billups. That was a very fun and nicely created team they had. In all honesty, I thought that Pistons team underachieved. They remind me a lot of the 08 C Bags in how they were constructed.

Detroit played a perfect series, but I agree with abeer. Losing Malone deflated our team and completely changed the way they played us. Kobe faced a double or triple team the rest of the way.

Usually I agree with whatever @abeer3 so yeah - what he said lol

I remember Malone going down in the finals as well and that completely changed the series - having Slava on Rasheed Wallace absolutely cost us the series.

That team also had so many injuries - to shaq, kobe, malone, etc. Even with all of that, we still made it to the finals and then when it counted, we weren't healthy.

Detroit was also really good defensively...they surprised us in Game 1 and nearly beat us again in Game 2 - on our home floor.

I always think about 2004 and what could have been...I think Kobe going through rape trial also didn't help - he had to miss a lot of games and practices -

2008 - I can accept it - we weren't healthy (bynum and ariza mainly). We were healthy the next 2 years and won it all - so I'm good with losing 08 knowing we probably would have won if we were healthy.

ah, yes, the venerated "core" will be back in town with their boy zion... between sunday night's big win and yesterday's service for Kobe et alia, they'll assuredly be looking for a letdown on our part.

They had a solid bench as well: Okur, Williamson, Hunter, Campbell, etc. Lots of size and interesting mismatches they could create.

who knows what would have happened, but I'd have loved to have had a healthy veteran squad going into that series. Not having Horace Grant and Malone was a huge blow, and our two stars could not overcome the TEAM ball that Detroit was playing. Masterful game planning by Coach Brown that year.

forgot horace grant was on that 04 team

speaking of him. it's crazy to see him and lebron playing in the same game given they were from two completely different eras

Good win, but we are lucky that Gentry is dumber than Vogel.

Jrue Holiday is the Norm Nixon of that team. They should have traded him for Drummond.

Too many bonehead plays for a vet.

I don't get why we didn't just go big against them all game... but at least we won.

...annoying that we can't put away the game with double digit leads but Pelicans have talent and still figuring it out.

Jrue's not their problem: did a better job on Lebron then the rest of the their squad.

Issue with them is Ingram can't guard a chair, inconsistent shooting, and Zion is just young

I get Rondo being bad because he's old and is playing one of the more difficult positions but Kuzma has no more excuses... Markieff was there to play PF and this Kuzma still couldn't do anything. Puma is calling lawyers right now to try and reneg their endorsement deal with Kuzma as we speak.

Kuzma does need more than 12 minutes tho - that's not enough for him to really get going.
