I mean he's got to knock down the three ball. If he can't knock down an NBA three, then there's really no hope for him in the NBA. He was voted among his peers as the best shooter in his draft class. It's odd that it hasn't translated at all. He's a decent defender and an average decision maker, but if he can shoot then he becomes a 3&D guy like we want him to be and that'd be very valuable for our squad. Yesterday he was getting eaten up by Ingram in practice from the small clips we saw. It was like Brown wasn't even in front of him sometimes.
Ingram with his smooth game and potential will abuse many a defender. Brown was just an appetizer. Calderon will be asked to manage the second unit which Brown will have a crack at. He doesn't have Scott anymore to hide behind or as an excuse. It will be a make or break season for him. Shooting is confidence. This is where Shaw's reputed player development rep comes into play. On topic: Calderon will not shy from taking the big shot and I would trust him in making it.
I have already forgotten about Brown. If we thought he was a big asset, we would not have signed Deng and drafted Ingram. I have a hard time seeing him getting any playing time this year.
Absolutely. I think the Calderon/Coaching combination is actually a huge help to a kid like Anthony Brown. He's athletic, a good defender, and if he can just knock down the three at a good rate he'll stick in the NBA. Calderon though the more I think about it the happier I am he's here. There are few backup PGs that fit so well offensively. He can shoot, pass, and isn't going to get in the way of developing our young kids? How much more can we ask for?
That could be well be... We're stocked at the three and it is murky if Brown can find time at the two with Clarkson and Williams entrenched there. He is still preferable to Young from a locker room standpoint.
I don't have the highest hopes and clearly neither do the Lakers, but this is his last chance to prove us wrong. If he can knock down a three, he's got a place.
Agreed. But this was a bad FA summer and this new money is still a bit of a shock to me. In old money it was like paying him 9 mil per year for a guy with 2 years and 15/4/2 and .433 which even that sounded high. 12.5 is still a bit high sounding to my ears for that. But like I said JC may very well earn every penny of it. And maybe even be beyond that value by the 3rd-4th year I'm not griping that deal at all just saying it still sounds high to me, as do ALL the deals this summer, even after taking into account the 25% cap increase.
In fairness Byron kept messing with him. I mean he made him start against argurably the best offensive player in the league since a prime Kobe. Seriously? The dude is a second round pick. You maybe play him 10-15 minutes whatever time KD isn't out there. He couldn't knock down many shots, but I honesty think he just needs more confidence because he does have shot making ability. He needs to show something and hopefully at least be a solid backup 3.
I don't think I agree with the 9 million dollars sounding high. I mean even without context of this summer at worst Jordan Clarkson is an effective 6th man. Lou Willliams got 7 million from us. So if Jordan is a starter (which the Lakers envision him being) he should get 9 million dollars. Last season Danny Green made 10 million, Varejao made 9.6 million, Alec Burks made 9.2 million, Jeff Green made 9.2 million, Lance Stephenson made 9 million, Iman Shumpert made 9 million. I think Clarkson is well within the value of those players. In the context of this summer he made 20 million less than Evan Turner, 22 million less than Joakim Noah, and 35 million less than Evan Fournier. He made 20 million less than Kent Bazemore and Bismack Biyombo. Heck he even is making less than guys like Marvin Williams and Eric Gordon, let alone Mozgov, Deng, Ryan Anderson, and Chandler Parsons. We got a great deal on Clarkson.
I think we got the "thanks for finding me in the second round and giving me an opportunity" discount.
I remember this of course and it sucked that we lost but I loved how Jose reacted after making that shot. No big deal. I've been here before
Not gonna lie, I think his relationship with Jenner may have been a factor. He knows if he signs somewhere else, he will lose her as she ain't moving to Charlotte or something to watch him play with the Hornets. Granted we could have matched, but why bother playing that game? What if we for some reason don't decide to match then his bluff has him living in Detroit or something.
