    Not even half are busts.

You really want to take that chance when the odds of landing players like Aldridge, Durant, Horford, Rose, Griffin, Harden, Beal, Wall, Irving, Davis, Olapido, Wiggins, KAT are greater?

With our scouting department the odds are even greater as you probably agree.

I agree that this is better and I know Bucks would demand this or more but I still wouldn't trade those pieces for him.

the common theme among the busts at that level, imo, is that they came in draft years wherein there was little consensus about who should be in those spots. this is not one of those years. that doesn't absolutely protect you against a bust, but it helps.

that said, i'm listening to trade offers for the 1 or 2 (and i'm the one making calls with the #3). i don't know if hayward moves the needle for me, though. the lakers are a superstar franchise, and he's definitely not that.

cousins is superstar talent (HUGE RISK, however). paul george isn't quite there, but he's obviously a much safer choice--and he's close to superstar ability, imo. jimmy butler is another notch down from george, but again, quality individual. these are the names i'd have to hear to consider moving a pick that high. and no extra stuff, btw. the only way you're getting russell or randle IN ADDITION to that pick is if the name i'm hearing is lebron, durant, anthony davis, westbrook...hell, that might be it.

I agree with your take. I would also be open to trading if the pick is #3

yeah, and my asking price wouldn't be super high for the #3. a proven young nba starter at a position of need would probably do the trick. we're talking nic vucevic level here.

Not even half are busts?... Well getting away from what qualifies as a bust, at least one every year (besides MAYBE last year and it's probably too soon to tell) has been AT LEAST a disappointment if not an outright bust.

Again, you're missing the entire point of what @RandleROFY and I are saying anyway. If the Laker scouting department can find the next great player 1-3 then they'll do it. They'll keep the pick and their confidence in doing so will be a huge boon to our franchise, but if they don't see one of the names you just mentioned (and by the way Oladipo and Beal have no business on that list), then they'll move the pick.

I'd trade Oladipo or Beal for Hayward and you'd better believe Orlando and Washington would too in a heartbeat.
I'd also trade the potential to eff up the pick on Thabeet, Embiid, Porter, Bennett, Kidd-Gilchrist, Williams, Turner, Thabeet, Mayo, Beasley, Oden, Bargnani, or Morrison. Yes I said Thabeet twice because he was that bad of a bust...

Look if Rose or Durant is in the draft, we'll take him but I'm not sure he's there. And if he ISN'T there then give me a deal for a guy like Hayward absolutely.

    So...

#1 + JC for PG, as I think he is a bit overrated.
#1 + JC + Randle for Giannis, as I think he is that good.

Man, if only there was some fantasy-like price tag on these dudes.

    I am all over that s***... :):)

OK, as long as it's another hypothetical.... my gut feeling tells me they'll really like Simmons though.

Olapido and Beal are on the same level as Hayward imo. They're still on their rookie contracts and have a great career ahead of them. They aren't busts by any stretch.

When's the draft lottery so we can speculate a little more accurately on a potential course of action?

They have to at least bring in the lottery talent to evaluate them right??? (Assuming we get the pick)

They're not living up to their draft selection either though and it kind of helps prove my point. A draft selection in the first three picks shouldn't just be a guy with a solid career. A draft selection that high should be someone you build your franchise around. Can you build around Oladipo or Beal or Heild? I don't think so. So then in my opinion, you trade the pick.

I'm not sold on Simmons although I think the Lakers really like him. I'm more interested in Ingram. I have almost no interest in anyone past those two though.

    Is it the 17th?

I've notice in non playoff years it sure takes a long time to get here. When you are in the playoffs, it just sneaks up on you. The good ol' days!

Well considering their draft classes I'd have to bring up @abeer3 's point regarding the relationship between bust potential and the consensus of those top picks. In other words, Beal and Olapido were pretty good picks in their weak (historically weak in 2013) draft classes. So I'd say they're living up to their draft positions.

2012 - players currently better than Beal - Davis, Lillard, Drummond, Green
2013 - players currently better than Oladipo - Antetokounmpo

The bust potential is much lower this year with Ingram and Simmons. And again, with our drafting, that percentage is close to zero. However, given that there is no consensus on #3, I agree with you that it should be traded.

If we can get Butler or George i'm all for trading the pick as they both fill a big need, are still young enough and improve our Chances at FA's tremendously. But no to guys like Cousins ...

CJ McCollum is better than Oladipo. Michael Carter- Williams won ROY even though I think he's not great. Pretty soon I think Steven Adams and Alex Len could pass up Oladipo.

I just don't agree that bust potential is low. Simmons and Ingram seem great, but could that just relative? And if they're relatively great instead of truly outstanding, then why do we want them? I don't want someone who is considered the strongest of a weak draft class unless that strength means a truly exceptional NBA talent. Randle and Russell have the ability to stand out in two fairly strong classes. THAT is the kind of player you build around.

If Ingram and Simmons are Oladipo, then I want to trade him. Oladipo is solid, but if I can get a more established player of greater or equal talent then I want that. The established player brings gravitas, professionalism, and would be more attractive to FAs. I think Horford or DeRozan would rather play with Hayward than Oladipo for example.

Well there's always a few from every draft class that overachieve. The hidden gems like Draymond or Ginobili. We happen to have two of them --- Nance and Clarkson. That still doesn't make all the players drafted ahead of them a bust. It just proves that our drafting department (as well as the Warriors' and Spurs') is superior to the vast majority. And that's the ingredient that makes our bust potential close to zero.

Ingram could become Oladipo, but Simmons I doubt it. It's rare that a prospect with the hype and scrutiny that he has turn out to be a bust (actually I can't remember of any... perhaps Oden but injuries can happen to anyone)

Does Simmons really have that much hype though? Seems like he had an underwhelming individual season on a team that couldn't even make the tournament.

Lakers apparently planning to offer Festuz Ezili in free agency. Not sure how I feel about that because of his knee issues.
