The deal they threw at Ginobili was impressive. I think it's a testament to our brand name that we were able to get more useful veterans than Ginobili at all, even if we had to overpay a bit.

We had to overpay somewhat as we are in a rebuilding mode after three straight losing seasons with nothing to sell except a promising core along with the usual big market exposure angle. Ginobili if we are to be honest used the Sixer offer to leverage San Antonio. He really wanted to stay...

For sure. However, the sheer amount of money they were willing to put up and still get rejected for an over-the-hill vet while we still pulled them in is impressive to me.

Waiters to MIA. JR is staying in CLE but i have a feeling we might be a dark horse. Russell,Clarkson,JR,Lou,Calderon would be crazy depth. Can always flip a player or two at the deadline.

Absolutely wan't nothing to do with JR Smith. The complete opposite of what we are trying to do. He's more productive than Nick Young but he's the same head case.

I had a nightmare that we somehow used our remaining cap space in a sign and trade deal to get Dellavedova to back-up Calderon ...

He just signed with another team, so not possible to do a sign and trade. Breathe easy!

    http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/242945/Dion-Waiters-Agrees-To-Two-Year-$6M-Deal-With-Heat

Dion Waiters has agreed to sign with the Miami Heat on a two-year, $6 million deal. Waiters will hold a player option in Year 2.

The Heat can sign Waiters with their Room MLE.

Waiters could have previously signed the $6.8 million qualifying offer with the Thunder at any point until it was withdrawn on July 18th.

Several teams expressed interest in Waiters at the start of free agency but expected the Thunder to match an offer sheet.

Another guy that overestimated the market for him.

There were rumors he was getting a huge offer from Brooklyn or Portland, but it never materialized.

He didn't sign his QO because he assumed he'd get a big piece of the pie this summer. That QO was worth more in one year than he's getting now over two years.

Agreed even if the fit there is somewhat awkward as well. I guess they're pretty confident they're about to make a leap?

They'll make the playoffs. I think they'll be better than a lot of West teams, but not enough of them.

That's fine. We didn't really have room for him and for having to pay him around $10 million a year for the kind of role he would have on our team.... not worth it.

i think it's that they're confident they can move him (or ed davis, or aminu) in trades if need be. i agree with that idea. all three are appropriately or under-paid, which makes them useful trade bait. and the only way portland gets a second star is via trade.

it's counter to the zeitgeist; maybe it works for them. the cynic says they just sunk a ton of cash into a team that will range from first-round exit to missing the playoffs entirely.
