The line-up of death should be pretty insane to watch now:

    Green
    Durant
    Iggy
    Thompson
    Curry

    Good luck with that one.

Durant's situation is a lot different than Lebron's. This will blow over, and there is no guarantee of anything but getting every team's best shot when playing next year.

Durant handles himself much better than Lebron, so he'll never have the same backlash. Look at the difference in letters by the owners regarding the departure their star.

One of the biggest and most powerful athletes in the world should not be cheating and flopping, and constantly whining to the refs.

Sorry Rock, but I hate this argument. I can turn it back on you easily: Haven't we learned anything about trying to sign a FA?

I think if our players develop the way they should, we would have a shot at Westbrook next year. Gutting this core now makes little sense unless its we only trade one of the big 4 (Russell, Clarkson, Randle and Ingram) + someone else. Or two if its Randle and Clarkson. I would trade Randle and Clarkson in a heart beat for Cousins or Westbrook (with commitment for an extension) if I could.

If the team continues to blow though...good luck with FAs...then you gotta pay big stiffs like Mozgov top dollar for them to take you to the lottery. We must add piece after piece.

First rule to get a superstar to sign here is to have a superstar he wants to play with. Westbrook is such a piece.

Again: I have no desire to gut the team. That's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying trading a small portion of the kids for Westbrook and if that's not enough, then we pass.

I'm fine with a long rebuild. I've been okay with it, I'm on record with it, and if we do it that way it'll be a fun ride I think. I just think it's crazy people are blowing off this idea so easily.

As for underestimating the situation we're in: of course I'm not! I love our young group. I think it's sort of destiny that we're not going to be truly competitive until the GS Warriors experiment has run it's course. However, I also love Russell Westbrook. If we want him here, we're going to have to figure out a way to get him here. There's really no way he's coming here unless we're an abnormally competitive team next year. If we're a 40 win team and almost an 8th seed then I think things change, but that's not really a reasonable expectation. I've already agreed with another poster but if we accept that: a) we're not going to be in title contention until at least 2020 and b) we don't get Russell Westbrook then okay. I'm on board. Let's do this.

And we aren't at ground zero if ground zero means we have no players. We're at 2015/2016 Wolves territory. We've got the young guys, but we're still not going to win a bunch of games. Despite having two great young prospects and a couple other very good ones the Wolves won just 29 games last year. That's where we are. It's a good place to be all things considered, but we're not going to get great players rushing to be here.

Heaven forbid the Lakers get CP2/Kobe/D12 while giving away Pau and Lamar.

Dirk has been taking pay cuts now for half a decade. What's weird is this time that pay cut is meaningless. Dallas doesn't have the ability to find any FA worth their money. Why take a pay cut at all?

I mean good on him for being charitable but I'm all about getting as much cash you can get.

Getting him to stay by overpaying since they are failing to put a good team around him?

They actually have a decent plan B going, but this is kind of a shocker.

well, it's a pay increase over what he's been getting. then again, with ryan anderson getting 20 per, this is minimum market value for dirk. anyway, mavs doing the right thing here: they got a couple players in FA, then made good with their franchise icon. i wish kobe would have played it like dirk, lakers might be in a much better spot right now.

There is no way for Dirk to retire and make 20 million a year.

As long as he gets it, he can play untill the wheels start to fall off.

Agreed. I was actually on board with your previous post as well.

As for breaking up our young core, we need to develop them for at least another 1-2 years to get fair value for them (especially Russell, imo) The expiration of Westbrook's contract does not align with our timetable. He's not destined to land here.
