I don't see a scenario where Russell ends up staying AND we get Butler AND George... Teams will force that out of us if we want to get that much better. The 4th year on those Mozgov/Deng deals is killer right now. Those are some serious albatrosses. If we can trade for George it might be worth it to stretch Deng.
Not a capologist, but I have heard that stretching Deng this summer gets us an extra 11 milllion in cap space. The Paul George rumors are nice, but we can't realistically have a discussion until we know we keep our lottery pick this May when the lottery takes place.
Apparently the conversations are being had between Magic and Larry Bird (go figure!) right now about George. I'm with you, I think it makes way more sense for both teams to wait, but maybe Boston is really throwing a wrench in the works with an offer. Stretching Deng makes his contract a little over 7 million dollars for the next 7 years. It would free up just about 11 million dollars this summer though.
It's Nets are sending Bogdanovic and Chris McCullough to the Wizards for Andrew Nicholson and a 2017 first-round pick. Nice pickup by the Wiz. 14.2ppg this season. They wanted scoring and Bojan is definite punch off the bench. Plus they are unloading the contract of Nicholson and getting McCullough, who was the #29 pick by the Nets just 2 years ago. As for the Nets... suffice to say the C Bags are cheering. Not that the Nets' status as the worst team in the league this season is in danger but this assists in them sucking next season also.
Kind of off topic but it impacts our flexibility for trades: where are those who defended the Mosgov deal now? Like it was stated, that contract is crippling right now.
I would prefer this, but when you say sign George, Cousins, etc outright where are you getting this money from. These next few years we have to start paying our young guys. Randle for example is eligible for an extension this coming off-season.
Alright a quick scenario for you guys: Lakers out: Russell/Clarkson/Nance Jr./Black Indiana out: George/Jefferson (heh) The Lakers salary in the summer would look like (assuming Young opts out): George- 19.5 Deng- 17.1 Mozgov- 15.3 Jefferson- 9.8 Brewer- 7.6 Ingram- 5.5 Randle- 4.2 Zubac- 1.3 Total after cap holds~ 83.5 million Projected salary cap is set at around 103 million next summer. We'd have only about 20 million to spend which is less than any level of max contract the lowest of which start at around 24 million next year. We could stretch Deng which would mean giving him 7.71 million of our cap space for 7 years which would free up about 9.4 million bringing us close to 30 million. We could stretch Mozgov which would be about 6.86 million for 7 years of our cap and would free roughly 8.44 million in cap space. There's ways we could get to a max contract, but none of them ideal and we'd great increase our odds of losing our pick this year and our pick in 2019.
Boston isn't looking to break their team up for PG, especially if he's planning to leave the following year.
what boston can offer and what boston does offer have been historically discrepant. almost insultingly so at times, i think. also, i don't think stretch-waiving deng and mozgov makes much sense. you want 15 million in completely dead salary for seven years instead of 34 million of partially dead salary for 4 years? just take your losses and hope to move them in their last year for something good--by that time the current cba will have made expiring contracts useful again, imo.
Was there ever a big name FA, that wasn't tied to the Lakers. Media runs with this ish all the time. Every player loves Hollywood. The babes, sunshine and palm trees. Our great history and all... We know how it ends
George for Clarkson, Randle, and our best 1st rounder next year. Then see if they can get better than that. I'll toss in Young, too.
I know this isn't the greatest positive, but by this time next year, those salaries will be much more manageable and even stretchable. Now its pretty darn premature.

Yup. That seems to be the case again now where reports suggest they don't want to include Jaylen Brown or the Nets 2017 1st rounder in talks for Butler.
I'm not disagreeing, just showing what the positives and negatives would be to making a move right now. Unless we could do something like Russell/Clarkson for Paul George straight up, I don't know that I would make the move. We have to find a way to keep George happy here and I'm not sure there's an easy way to do that if we make move before tomorrow's deadline.
