Yeah, maybe I'm lumping the first 2/3 together. First 1/3 was awesome (i felt), second 1/3 was tolerable, and last 1/3 was utter wtf garbage.
The Hobbit is the prequel to the Lord of the Rings, so that one first. Not to mention it's a far, far, far easier read. Tolkien toned that book down compared to the Lord of the Rings books. The movies simply didn't have the same charm as the original trilogy and yes I understand it's a reflection of the books, but I don't understand why the story is so muddled, there's additional characters that don't need to exist (the woman elf), the direction is so bad, the acting- especially in the first half of the movie- is awful, there's unneeded and unwarranted attempts at comedy with an unnecessary character... It's just a bad movie. The first movie is honestly better even though it's not great either.
yeah, this Hobbit movie was disappointing. Although interestingly enough, I still liked Bilbo better than Frodo as a hero. The guy that played Bilbo is much more likeable to me
I think Bilbo as a character is more likable than Frodo in the Tolkien universe in general. I thought Frodo was much more of a tragic figure.
Anyone see Birdman? It was a great movie, I would highly recommend it. The most interesting part was that the entire film (minus the intro and conclusion) was edited to look like it was shot without any cuts (it journals the 3 days leading up to the opening night of a Broadway production). Psychology plays a role in the theme of the film.
When I get back home to San Diego, I really want to see American Sniper. Anyone see it yet? I've purposely held off reading Chris Kyle's book so I could see the movie first.
I just watched Tusk because you guys reminded me I wanted to see it. Yeah, it was pretty stupid, but I thought some of the canadian comedy was funny. I would have been mad if I had paid money to see it in a theater though.
I watched Fox Catcher last night. True story about the Du Pont family and the Olympic wrestling team. What a letdown. See it on video, but do NOT see it in theaters. You'll regret it. Sad, because I had high hopes for it.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought this Hobbit movie was subpar. I thought the first two were good actually. Of course not better than LOTR but the first two brought back the magic from the LOTR series. I'm actually very sad there will be no more LOTR related movies released. It's done
Oh I highly doubt that. I'm sure they make another one pulled from the vast, vast pages of Tolkien's writings. Heck just the way this last series went, I think they could make a whole new story that they just made up.
Well after that last showing, maybe Peter Jackson isn't the best guy for the job moving forward... Yikes!
Let us know how Unbroken is. Love those type of movies but fear that I'll be let down because I have high expectations.
Unbroken was great. Greatest generation ever. No doubt about it. I think Angelina Jolie did a fantastic job directing this movie.
Yeah true enough. I thought actually that they could have done a better job of giving us Dupont's character development. They tried, but Michael Scott had no chemistry with the mother. I think they relied a lot on shock value to get the story across. First the actors are mostly people you wouldn't expect, so you're willing to give them a lot of slack. Then the events themselves are shocking enough to keep the story alive.
