De Niro for two Friday nights in a row... I thought it was good comedy drama... Liked it. There was a silly sketch in the middle but was not that bad. Grade: B Really stupid...not remotely funny which it tried very hard. Cute twist in the end but an overall dreck. WTF was he doing in it? Grade: F
I like Hiddleston as an actor but just not enough suave and rugged enough to be Bond IMO. Clive Owen would be great.
I agree, but he's probably too old. (52) When they cast Bonds they want them for a decade. It's why I think all the talk about Idris Elba will amount to nothing. He's already 44 or so.
Elba is still the best actor available for the role by far. He's older, but give him 2-3 films shot every 4-6 months. It's hard to do, but he's the man for the job. I honestly don't understand why they didn't give it to him last time when he was the best candidate. Craig was an alright Bond, but Elba would have been so much better. Fassbender is another obvious option. Hiddleston just doesn't do it for me. I like him, but he looks more like a Bond villain than Bond himself.
I'd love Elba, but if he does 5 movies for instance, those last couple will be in his 50s. They aren't going to choose a Bond actor for 2 or 3 movies. He isn't going to agree to do a whole bunch of them back to back every 4-6 months. He's far too in demand, and he'd never agree to sacrifice 4 years of his life to a single acting endeavor. But no question. He is the best candidate. I like Hiddleston as an actor, but I totally agree that he strikes me more as the villain. Maybe that's just the Loki coming out of him. He's also not as physical as Craig. We'd be going back to a Pierce Brosnan style Bond.
I don't think you can definitively say he wouldn't do those things. Sure he's in demand, but is he really in a ton of demand? The last year he's done mostly voice work (Jungle Book, Finding Dory) and some tv work. He made a couple crappy movies that should come out this year, but they're nothing special. If you pay him enough and give him the role he was born to play? He'd do it. It's about committing though and of course they won't do it because God forbid you let the suave black guy be Bond for some reason. I mean I know the reason and it's not necessarily their fault (international sales would dip, it's just the way it is) but still. The guy deserves it. And I don't buy the 5 movies being a necessity thing. Craig did his first Bond at 38 years old and got four movies out of it. Heck they even wanted him to do a couple more and he's 48 right now. You could get 3 out of Elba for sure and in that time frame find a good replacement because right now I'm not digging any of their options. Hiddleston is not Bond to me. Too thin and wispy... I don't buy it at all. I'm fine with the suave Bond, but that could be freaking Elba!
Agree on your comment... Henry Cavill? He has the physique and that self assured smirk. Enjoyed his role as Napoleon Solo in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Alicia Vikander for Bond Girl! Gerard Butler? Yes, Elba would be a great Bond. Really shake s***t up.
Cavill is a good choice. I firmly believe Hollywood used UNCLE as a test run for Bond to see if he could handle it. I'm not sure it was well received enough for him to garner the position. He's certainly got the look for it though.
My local theater has $5 movies all day on Tuesdays and Thursday's so I checked it out. Probably wouldn't recommend paying full price for it. It's a decently entertaining thriller, but very in your face with its message and extremely unreleastic at points. In case anyone else has seen it: Spoiler Maybe I'm just overly sensitive because of the recent shootings, but I thought that this movie was kind of irresponsible in its tone. Without any character development or suggestions of precious concern, Clooney's character does a 180 in the last act and seems to allign himself with a mentally unstable criminal just to expose corporate fraud. He goes along with everything, putting others lives at risks, including his loyal producer who almost got killed in the mayhem, and then at the end we're supposed to feel bad for this crazy terrorist when he gets shot down. If you've seen the movie, the scene with his girlfriend was the best and most realistic. This was a story about a loser who made a ridiculously stupid gamble in the stock market based on watching one episode of a TV show, and then overreacted and put several innocent lives in danger. I thought it was going to be a much deeper movie about the systemic flaws in our economy and how dangerous it is that we allow money to influence the media and politics.
I watched Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping and it's honestly not bad. If you like Lonely Island even a little bit, you'll love it. It's got an actual plot and everything. If you want some raunchy, stupid fun for a night it's worth it.
Other than Bieber being offed...this movie has scant memorable scenes. I should've rented 10 Cloverfield Lane instead. Grade: D
10 Cloverfield Lane. John Goodman was great as usual, as well as the two other actors. Winstead is a cutie, been a fan since Sky High. I disagree on Tom Hiddleston. Watch The Night Manager. That was his Bond audition.
Watched 10 Cloverfield Lane also. Loved it. The tension in that movie keeps you on edge until a great release at the end. From what I read it's in the same universe as the original Cloverfield but unrelated to the events. There may be a tie-in movie that connects them, hopefully soon. Also took my family to see Finding Dory. Kids loved it. It's imaginative, where the first movie was more grounded in reality they took more liberties with this one. Still a good family movie.
