I just saw this preview. Nice to see him use some new actors for a change. LOL And yes, I'll be there opening night.
Saw "Get Hard." I laughed out loud once. It wasn't terrible, but it was scarcely passable. D. Saw "The Lazarus Effect." Pretty unimpressive despite an awesome cast. Not spooky, not original. I don't really see how the flick was made. D. Saw "Mama." Another really underwhelming premise, poor execution, and not remotely scary. D-.
Yeah, I was thoroughly disappointed with Get Hard. There were a few funny moments during the training/preparation montage but most of it just tried too hard to be funny. I thought Wedding Ringer was much better from Hart. I was really looking forward to Lazarus Effect too, then I saw it. Really like both leads, Duplass is typically very good in small budget films and great in the League...and Olivia Wilde...need I say more? Good idea, but it didn't work as a horror movie.
Straight Outta Compton was fantastic. If you're a fan of the genre, you'll love it. I think most people will enjoy it, even if they don't like rap. The movie centers around Dre, Cube and Eazy. Ren and Yella have parts, but they don't get really deep into their characters. I think they nailed Suge's part too.
Just saw Straight Outta Compton and it was really good. I was actually a bit surprised at the quality because these bio music movies are never that good, but this one was. I especially like the performance from Ice Cube's son. He nailed playing his father.
Agree about Cube's son. He did a really good job. The actors for Jerry Heller, Snoop, and 2Pac were all good too. I was surprised to see that Jimmy Iovine wasn't the real guy. Looked EXACTLY like him. I read that the original movie was 3 1/2 hours and F. Gary Gray will release the extra hour when the DVD comes out. For example, in the previews you see Eazy about to take an AK on the tour bus. That never made the movie. Dre and the Dee Barnes situation was never touched on either.
The Loft - suspense/thriller...OK but did get convoluted in spots. Rachael Taylor made the movie bearable. C+... C- if she wasn't in it. What We Do In The Shadows - comedy documentary about vampire life. Quirky, off beat and more funny moments than I expected. A solid B.
Just watched the trailer. Gotta watch this one. My family has a cabin in Blue Jay, a little town about 5 minutes up the mountain from Crestline. Jeez, this is gonna be creepy. I might have to save it and watch it while at the cabin!
Watched Straight Outta Compton. B+ Really awesome performances from the actors who played Dre and Eazy. Cube's son was good when he was angry or funny, but if he had to be serious or emotional it was... rough to watch. DJ Yella and Ren's parts were played decently. There were some hammed up writing bits of dialogue that were just a little too on-point. I can't think of any one example that stands out without spoiling the movie but think of the line from the FF commercials where Teller says "he's too strong for any one of us, but not too strong for all of us!" People don't actually talk like that. Still overall it was really well filmed, paced nicely to keep you interested, and of course you saw "cameos" from all kinds of different artists in the genre. It got intensely emotional at times and while I'm sure a lot of the movie is shown with a Hollywood flair, you can still take some good insight into the mentality behind their work and some of their actions. I'd watch it again and I'm recommending to everyone I know, even people who aren't fans of rap.
Took my lovely lady and she was floored. Loved it and that's why I love her. I was thinking of taking one of high school aged nieces/nephews with me. At least that way they can experience real music for a change.
Rented it as a lark... Reminded me somewhat of Final Destination at least the first one anyway but more of character development on the menu. So this is about ghouls through S.T.C. [Sexually Transmitted Curses]. Had an 80's horror flick feel to it even if it's without the prerequisite slash and gore. At least the kids weren't portrayed as obnoxious, dim bulbs that the viewer would liked seeing offed one by one. Not bad. Strong B. A bit slow in the first third but picked up pace near the middle and the ending was well crafted. The bot just f'd-up everybody. I snickered just how she went about doing it. Talk about playing everyone. Intelligent without resorting to flashy and distracting cues or physical stunts. I enjoyed it. B+ and a solid one at that.
It is one of those films where you have to listen to the dialogue where most of the film's gist presides. It did not get campy nor did it veer too much into existentialist narrative. I did not have to deal with the tired sci-fi cliché lines too. There were some scenes that were humorous though were probably unintentional.
Ex Machina is brilliant and weird. I loved it. Rest easy Wes! Rest easier than you made your fans rest for all those years developing nightmares that exist to this day.
