My problem with Helms is I don't think he's a lead. He can be passable in an ensemble (Hangover, The Office) or when there's someone to cover for his weaknesses. But nothing about him screams lead or great comedic actor. Put him in that spot and I expect failure. I grunted and groaned in the trailer more than I laughed, figured the movie would be the same. I'll wait till red box.
@ThizGuy83 I caught it on Netflix a few months ago. Was also pleasantly surprised by it. Just don't watch it if you're stuck at the house or hungry. It's torture.
As someone who likes to cook and watch cooking shows, Chef was actually an anticipated movie for me. I saw interviews with Favreau before it came out about how he trained and wanted to make it realistic. I saw it in the theater, and I enjoyed the movie a lot. I've seen people criticize it for odd (to me) reasons, but none of that came to my mind when watching it. As for Helms, I agree with JSM. I did enjoy a movie no one else seems to have seen called Cedar Rapids starring him, but that could have been more because of John C Riley. Vacation doesn't look funny in the trailers or commercials to me, and that isn't a good sign for a comedy. If a movie has 2 minutes to hook me and make me laugh, even if only once, and can't do it, there's a problem. It's either bad marketing, holding back the best stuff, or a bad movie. Usually it's a bad movie.
after the first time watching it, all i was craving was a cuban sandwich, and yes watching this movie has the same rules as grocery shopping, dont do it while hungry
I liked the trailer I saw for Vacation and I was hoping for good things... After all the reviews, I'll catch it on television at some point. Netflix will probably pick it up. Still need to watch Chef.
Saw this movie in the theaters when it came out. Loved it and thought it was the kind of movie no matter your mood someone would enjoy seeing
Just saw The Gift. Some good twists and turns. Slow pace, but the ending is good. Joel Edgerton wrote, directed, and starred in it. I'd give it a C / C+. It's got a 90+ on IMDB. That won't stick for long though.
The Gift (C+) I think you're right, John. It's solid, but it won't stay that high on IMDB. Some creepy stuff, but I don't want to see Bateman as that kind of character (no spoilers, mind you). Some good twists, for sure. A pretty solid cast and an interesting story.
I don't know what you've already seen or what you're favotire genre is, but there are some recent quality additions to Netflix for my taste. A few Kristen Wiig movies in The Skeleton Twins and Welcome to Me. Nightcrawler was also recently added, or the Babadook if you like horror, I seem to remember you're a fan of that genre. There's also tons of interesting documentaries on Netflix, I just watched Mirage Men. As for movies, I finally saw Snowpiercer yesterday. I liked it a lot, still not sure how I feel about the ending, but the ride there was pretty wild. I'm going to watch it a 2nd time for sure.
I just started watching Rectify on Netflix and just blew through the first couple of episodes. Almost finished with first season. I have always loved documentary's, movies, or shows on people who have been or currently are in prison but are truly innocent and how they react when they're out or if they're still in prison how they function. The show may be a little slow for some people but I think we're just in the character development stage which has been solid so far. Season 3 started last month so I'll be caught up in no time. There is another movie/documentary on netflix about this same kind of thing, which I absolutely loved called An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story I would definitely check that out if you dont have time for a new show and its only 1 hour and 30 minutes long. The Hurricane starring Denzel Washington is another movie with basically the same genre/subject.
I'm glad someone said something about Snowpiercer because its been in my queue for a while now but I just keep choosing something else to watch instead. I'll give it a shot
Pound of Flesh - Van Damme...how far he's fallen. Reminded of those cheesy, international martial arts flicks of the 80's. A solid D. Kingsman - First part of the movie was good, dissolved into camp action with a crude ending. C+ Solid cast with Firth, Caine and Jackson...
Mirage Men sounds kinda cool. I'll check it out An Unreal Dream: The Michael Morton Story - sounds like my kinda flick. The Skeleton Twins sounds okay. I like Wiig a lot, but the last film I saw with her in it was horrible. The one where she wins the lottery and starts her own talk show. Wow. DBZ: I'll check it out but not in theater, I think. I've heard there are significant inaccuracies in the Hurricane film. I thought Snowpiercer was decent. I thought Babadook was pretty depressing. Not a bad film, but I'll never watch it again. Rectify felt a lot like Life, which I thought was a pretty good series, and I'm sad it was cancelled. I don't like Gylenhaal, so it's hard for me to be motivated to watch films with him in them (like Nightcrawler).
