    The extended, Director's cut:

Sources: Lakers sign Metta World Peace to nonguaranteed deal
    [IMG]
By Adrian Wojnarowski4 hours agoYahoo Sports

Free-agent forward Metta World Peace has reached agreement on a one-year, nonguaranteed deal to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, league sources told Yahoo Sports.

connection to the younger players, especially 2014 No. 7 overall pick Julius Randle.

World Peace has been out of the NBA since the New York Knicks waived him during the 2013-14 season. He played last season in China and Italy.

World Peace played four seasons with the Lakers from 2009-13 and was instrumental in them winning the 2010 championship. Los Angeles amnestied World Peace after the 2012-13 season.

In 15 NBA seasons, World Peace has averaged 13.7 points and 4.7 rebounds. He had stops with the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, Lakers and Knicks.

Looking back at this play, it perhaps is the most savage play in NBA history.

    1) Bullies Kevin Durant with some "get out of my damn way" body contact.
    2) Posterizes Serge Ibaka with a nasty facial in transition.
    3) Turns to the crowd, yells and beats his chest.
    4) DESTROYS James Harden with an elbow to the head, knocking him out and giving him a concussion.

Welcome back Ron Ron, we missed you.

I'll be the Debbie Downer. I think this is a mistake. I remember his last 2 years in LA. If he's there to coach defense, hire him as a consultant / Asst Coach. But as a player, he's done. All he's gonna do is take minutes from a young player that we could be developing.

The Lakers reached out to Ron to help mentor Randle. From my understanding, they initiated the conversation, Ron obliged and has become instrumental in Randle's growth and development over the summer. He's also helping out the other young players on this team. A 35 year old who has lost a step but has been one of the best defensive players in the league for years and wasn't so bad offensively. He has a wealth of information that he can pass down. In that respect, I love the move, but I could also see the argument where he could bring the same mentor/developmental role as a coach.

However, as Sirron noted, the contract is non-guaranteed for 1.5 million dollars. Though, Woj reported that the potential is high that Ron expects to make the roster at the end of the bench in a small-forward role, the Lakers have given themselves the flexibility of going in another direction with their roster should Ron not make the team. We have 3 roster spots available. I'm very high on all of our young players. Nevertheless, it's up to these young men to prove they can earn one of the coveted roster spots the Lakers have available; they have all of training camp and 8 preseason games to prove it to the coaching staff and management that they can play at the NBA level and help our team win basketball games. That includes Ron. The Lakers will take the best 15 available and as Mitch mentioned in today's press conference are afforded the flexibility of waiving a guaranteed contract should that need arise.

I like Ron, and I hope he makes the team. However, may the best men win those roster spots, so we could take the best team we could into the regular season and gives ourselves the best possibility of winning basketball games. Ron could always stay on as a player developmental coach if he so chooses. For now, we'll give him a fair shot at making the team, and we'll see if he can capitalize on this opportunity. I am rooting for him...

I'm sad because to me this signals the end of Kobe's career after this season. Lakers teaming him up with one more ex-teammate to have his curtain call with.

It is sad if it's the end, but personally Kobe has been injured so much these past few seasons that I feel it's made the transition to him being retired easier.

"I think he'd be great in the locker room with young players, but we have to be careful not to use a roster spot too early because we have a lot of young kids ... that we're going to bring to camp," Kupchak said. "We don't want to put ourselves in a bind by getting 15 roster spots taken and not giving the young kids, who could be very talented, a chance to make the team. That's something that we're going to have to weigh.

In addition to World Peace, the Lakers are auditioning Tarik Black, Jabari Brown, Robert Upshaw, Jonathan Holmes, Michael Frazier and Marcelo Huertas. Holmes has $100,000 of his contract guaranteed, while Frazier is promised $50,000 and Upshaw $35,000.

Kupchak didn't rule out that a player with a fully guaranteed deal could be cut.

"We'll keep the best players," he said. "If there's a player that clearly outplays a player that's on a guarantee, then we can look to trade a player, and if we couldn't do that ... I think ownership would give us the flexibility to waive a [guaranteed] player if we had to."

I'm not sure what Metta is supposed to do. He hasn't played in a while, he is slow like a turtle and he can't finish or shoot. Nor is he part of the future.

And his defense isn't what it used to be. If he makes the final roster, the only explanation would be to mentor Anthony Brown, Larry Nance Jr. etc.

I would be irritated if he takes minutes away from the young guys.

i don't mind this at all but i wonder why they wouldn't just hire him as a coach or consultant if they're only bringing him in to mentor the young guys

unless he's regained a step or two which i highly doubt

Hiring him as a consultant wasn't an option because he's not ready to hang them up.

As a 10th-12th man, I don't see an argument to be made against this. If he was cutting into PT of an actual NBA player that we're developing, that's one thing -- but it will not cut into the playing time of Randle, Black, Upshaw, Russell, or JC. the rest of the young guys have not shown they are NBA'ers.

I want Metta to run the second unit:
    Black
    Bass/Randle
    MWP
    Swaggy
    Lou/Russell

(PF, PG hinge on their development)

MWP doesn't take plays off. His effort and hustle is contagious and something a group can rally around. In that unit, he's a 4th option. The toughness and bully ball from SF-C would mask the turnstiles in the backcourt. With him in the second unit, he'd go against Kobe every day in practice (or how many ever practices Scott doesn't sit them for). That's the competition standard you want to set for the young kids and the culture you want to establish.

There will be plenty of minutes for the young guards to get with Kobe sitting a lot.

Everyone said we needed another leader and another SF. We got both from someone Kobe respects more than 99% of the league. I don't care if he misses every 3 he shoots and can't get 3 inches off the ground for a layup, this is a massive win for the franchise this year.

I just wanted to remind y'all that Metta's FG% since joining LA (including his 1 year with the Knicks) and his 3pt% looked like this:

    .414/.355
    .397/.356
    .394/.296
    .403/.342
    .397/.315

And his FGA/36 minutes, which were 2.9 in Chicago, 3.2 in Indiana, and 3.8 in Sacramento, went to 4.4 with LA and 5.0 with New York. He averaged less than a point per FGA with New York.

I'm not sure I can stress how abysmal he now is, in all aspects.

    Then don't hire him.

This is precisely the argument I'll make.

    Suppose the starters are...
    Russell
    JC
    Kobe
    Randle
    Hibbert

That means our second unit is...
    Huertas?
    Williams
    Young
    Bass
    Black

If we juggle MWP in anywhere there, that means Williams at the 1, Young at the 2? I can't see MWP playing much SF, and he's not a better PF than Bass. And all this means that we have five spots left, minus one for Metta. So who're you tossing away?

    Upshaw
    Brown
    Brown
    Nance

In brief, I think that's the only way we could swing it, and I'd see that as taking away time from Nance, undoubtedly, and probably from the Browns, too.

    Russell/Huertas
    JC/Williams/Brown
    Kobe/Young/Brown
    Randle/Bass/MWP/Nance
    Hibbert/Black/Upshaw

    But, but...... INTANGIBLES!!!!!!

and we have Metta smilies begging to be used!

I think this amounts to a glorified camp invite. Being able to guard someone one on one does not equal NBA five on five effectiveness. Jordan could still beat most of the players in the NBA one-on-one for short spurts, but I'm sure he'd be abysmal in full-court NBA play with the worlds best athletes.

If anything, when I look at the roster turnover in the last couple of years with decent players, the front office has shown a willingness to make solid decisions taking into account all factors.

I don't think he will be on the opening day roster if the benefits don't outweigh the disadvantages of using up that roster spot. To me, this sounds like a very respectable way to give a reputable seasoned veteran a camp invite, and have a built in safety switch to flush the idea with no financial repercussions. It's a win win!

And I get to use metta-world panda Smileys for the next year LOL
