he's second guessing a lot of his catch and shoot threes. he's not ready to shoot on the catch, then realizes he's open, then rushes and misses.
Max is a dogged rebounder is what I mean and he grabs as much strays as he can, better than his teammates
Nice dunk but the dropoff in defense between him and Cam is noticeable. Can one of these roleplayers start hitting open 3s as well?
Maybe it’s just me but I think Max is very quick with his feet staying in front of very quick players in a similar manner with Cam. Who of course has the edge with his crazy long arms, quick hands and the timing to go with them. That’s where the drop off happens, not the foot speed. Maybe navigating screens as well. But I’m going to side with @Toklat in that it would have helped Max to already be picking up on whatever objective gap there is on D PLUS IMO creating his own gap advantage on offense to a degree over Cam (shooting form, confidence to go with it and an overall larger repertoire on O) …. IF he had been given some consistent minutes each game (like 8-10 of Prince’s who Ham has all kinds of patience for) to bring him along and let him progress against NBA competition. Instead of planting him on the bench except for rare 1-2 minute garbage minutes, and now needing him “without” any of that to come in and start and “hopefully” play at a high level both sides of the ball because of Cam’s absence. Even worse than what he did to Reaves last season. He’s given Max zero preparatory burn. Sure he’s hesitant to shoot. Probably fears the short hook.
i think max needs some time on the court to get the officials' respect, too. he gets a lot of ticky tack calls that more experienced guys don't get. i agree he has very quick feet and is generally in good position. but things like learning the refs and how to navigate screens can only come with experience on the big stage. and again, it's fine--he's young and cam has outplayed him. but if he were playing somewhere else, he'd be getting those reps and be looking a bit better, imo.
Outstanding showing tonight from Max. He handled it on both ends. Great to see him take advantage of the opportunity!
He could have been “more” ready the first couple of games after Cam went down with some game time from some of Prince’s, for instance, ridiculous minutes, as opposed to planted on the bench with DNPs.
Who would have thought giving a guy some minutes to build his confidence and get in a rhythm would help him play better...lol. Some of you and Hambone would still have Max sitting on the bench if it wasn't for injuries. Now acting like it was a well thought out plan...lol.
It was a well thought out plan. He was ready to perform, when we needed him. That's the life of a NBA role player. Lonnie Walkerish..be ready when your name is called.
Not as much the first couple of games though. What do you have against letting him play some minutes and get a rhythm as Toklat says. Especially when Prince is shooting so poorly to keep giving him big minutes and Max planted on the bench.
It's a matter of perspective..Prince takes one for the team nightly, he guards the better perimeter scorers and doesn't shoot much. It's a thankless job. Everybody in the rotation, doesn't have to be a scorer Cam's play kept Max glued to the bench IMO. It's a good problem to have tho, when we are healthy. I just don't believe that Max's playing time, or lack of,was any kind of factor, so far this season, except for his stats.
