I think this was Mitch's idea all along, not knowing the fixation Boron would develop for turning Lou Williams into a starter and a PG .....
All it took was a few minutes in the pre-season to see that he had this kind of game in him. Then we turned him into a SG and we forced him to play defense without help on the best PGs in the league... I mean we set him up to fail almost all season and fail he did. Now he looks like an NBA player at least. Now he looks like a contributor which is what he clearly showed he could be if given the right outlet. Honestly I hope we bring him back next summer but if not, I hope he goes somewhere like San Antonio where he'll be successful.
Damn, Huertas with another nice game! 28 minutes plus, 6-10 for 13 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 TO. Not bad for a shooting guard when our real backup point guard, Williams is still out of commission. Right Boron .....you numbnutz?
I think I'm going to hop on pretty soon if we keep moving to a more open offense where Celo can dominate. If so, I wouldn't mind bringing him back to play spot minutes at PG next season to spell DAR/JC.
http://www.lakersnation.com/lakers-...arcelo-huertas-return-next-season/2016/03/12/ Another one of Mitch's hard work finds and decisions to bring on board, Huertas too just like DAR, Randle, Black and Lou Williams (for repeat 6th man of the year) ..... got f***** by Boron. His rookie season (in the NBA) could also have been much better if it had been under a competent coach.
Everybody needs a quality backup PG, or even a third string one. IF we can't find a better one this offseason for cheap, or at least a reasonable price, then no, I don't have a problem bringing Huertas back for what he makes as a backup for another season. He isn't my top choice though, and I'd certainly look at upgrades before settling for him. But I can say that I at least feel a lot better now about him if we do keep him on, under a better coach and not ever used at SG, he could be as solid as we are seeing.
BS has screwed over the entire team. No one has been used correctly at all and a bunch of players have been overused too.
Brandon Bass might have benefitted. Boron using him out of position as a backup center might have just increased his value a little if he opts out for free agency. Teams could do worse in trying to have a "small ball" center option. He can bang, has skills, can jump and has a tremendous motor and work ethic. Plus of course play PF his normal position. I think Scott liked Nance and wanted to give him all the non Randle minutes at PF so to be fair to Bass for having signed here, per whatever minutes the FO might have discussed with him, then had to try him and play him at backup center. Seems like Black can't outplay him there at the moment. Of course Black would have been a lot further along with his game too had he gotten the minutes and consistent playing time. But I kind of see this and can't fault it. Nance has responded great with the playing time. And I feel pretty good about Bass even at backup center when he's in there.
One big benefit of the offense change is seeing how important Marcelo can be. Went from looking terrible to pretty darn good. Definitely a keeper..
I don't know about definite keeper. He obviously can pass, but eventually teams are gonna adjust and make him be a scorer because he's so reluctant to do that and he can't shoot. With his defense he can't play more than 10 minutes a game next season.
I think he's a definite keeper, but his role will pretty specific... You're right: teams will eventually dare him to shoot. As a bench player though, he's almost a perfect fit for an open offense where we can hide his defensive deficiencies and accentuate his ability to run an offense to perfection. What I find funny is how great he looks now is EXACTLY what we all saw in pre-season. Then Byron starts asking him to be an iso-defender on the league's best PGs where he gets exposed while also playing SG to Lou Williams' controlling guard off the bench. Then when that fails, Byron buries him on the bench instead of trying to figure out how best to use him because despite seeing him for weeks in Training Camp, Byron is bad enough not to know how to utilize his players.
Hey guys. Amicohoops.net just hired me as the new Lakers beat writer, and I just published my piece about Marcelo's turning his season around and returning to preseason form. If you have time, I'd greatly appreciate it if you would give it a read here.
He played really, really well tonight. Yes, he started getting predictable and jumping to pass at the end there, but that's partly on B0ron for running with him for too long. He's 32, he doesn't need to be playing looooong stretches, he needs to come in and give us some minutes and a boost like he did before he clearly wore out. He brought us back in this game, but he wore out, the Kings started figuring him out, and B0ron left him in too long.
