That may be as well. But if Rob is as good as we hope he can be then I just worry there may not be enough here with title, prestige, money, responsibility vs perhaps being his own man as GM of some other team. Oh well it should be clear that the organization is high on Ryan and he's close with Luke and he grew up with the Lakers, and all that somehow keeps him in the organization.
I was following everything on twitter today at work and now that I'm home I'm watching the Jeanie - Magic interview on Spectrum SportsNet and I'm liking what I am hearing. Was obviously stoked about the Pelinka hire as well. Considering all the nerves and chaos this morning this is turning out well.
I reckon Kupchak and Jim Buss probably did not use Ryan West's input as much...in one ear out the other?
I hope it's enough vs being his own GM somewhere else if it's a team he likes, that's all. Vs Magic Johnson sounds like he's keeping Ryan West: "Thank god we got a great scouting team with Ryan West leading it." Head of scouting dept. vs GM?
Johnson is probably going by with the current structure is. Changes could still be made as far responsibilities. The restructuring probably isn't complete yet. Ryan West was present at today's negotiations with Houston. I do agree with your concern that he will bolt somewhere for a bigger role. I'd like to retain Ryan West too.
Ryan West is a key part of the organization's future. Magic and Jeanie have made it abundantly clear that he's not going anywhere unless he desperately wants to leave.
The last 24 games will be a continuing evaluation of who we have... It will not be pretty but to quote Bill Parcells: "I don't care if we lose...just don't stink up the joint."
The more I read and hear the better I feel about all of this. There is a lot to be done and this won't be smooth sailing, but I think we took another step toward respectability today.
Magic and Pelinka are here because the Lakers are about superstars. Mitch and Jim did not produce the past few years that's why they' got fired. I'm behind this change for better or worse. Kupchak was inutile and was prone to self sabotage with singlemindedness
Overall opinions on the Pelinka hiring has been mostly positive. He is respected and well regarded. Pelinka may be a big fish on the free agent scene but that isn't forever. Ask Leigh Steinberg...
Yeah, both he and Magic are new with no experience with this so I expect bumps in the road. Still positive about all this despite how it was handled and rolled out to us.
No more leaning on business opportunities, no more trotting out history, no more "because we're the Lakers" and no more we don't need no stinkin' analytics...
So Pelinka seems to be a home run, but most journalists are shocked/upset with the firing of John Black. There is still no explanation why he was let go, hope it doesn't indicate a larger problem.
According to an "insider" on another forum, John Black and Kobe did not get along. If Kobe is going to join the organization in some capacity as Magic has suggested, then perhaps they're trying to accommodate him.
