I'm trying so hard not to hate on Eddie Jones, but IMO teams won once he was gone for a reason. He didn't have "it", and I was glad to see him go. I was pretty young, so I could have overblown it, but I remember him coming up small in big playoff moments.

You're not wrong. Still fun to watch with those late 90s teams.

I remember Jones standing up to the mouthy J.R. Rider in the Portland playoff series. He was also good enough to get the attention of The Glove who pulled a Lance Stephenson on him. Then we drafted some high school kid from Lower Merion, PA...

I thought Shaq was playing GM then and was given Rice, who was mediocre at best. Eddie and Kobe would have killed in the triangle and perimeter defense.

O'Neal also bellowed he was the GM when Malone and Payton came on board for less...

Jones had his issues in the playoff but at least he was solid from the get go since his rookie yr. He did do good in the playoffs in Mia as well as Hornets, he carried the hornets a few times in the playoffs

Eddie Jones buttermilk biscuits! Yeah the Rice trade wasn't necessary, remember him clanking so many 3s. The team just needed to mature.

Rice was bigger than Jones, more a true SF than SG, and IMO he hit some big playoff threes along the way that Jones might have missed.

G-Money was great in 2000. I dont know what games some of you were watching. Jones was a 2 and only a 2, Kobe played 40 min a game. It would have never worked.

Rice couldn't play with Kobe that's a fact, that's why his tenure with the Lakers was short. Shaq wanted shooters but Rice never did get his groove with the team. They played better with Fox at SF.

I thought that was desperation because he was up for an extension and the Lakers won't pay for an ill fitting player.

Rice averaged just under 16 points a game as a third option. He drew a lot of attention to him by skill and rep. 2000 was the first year of his decline and wasn't signed because the Lakers didn't want to over pay and they have Rick Fox.

Rice had his moments...Game 4 against Portland, Games 2 and 4 in The Finals where he hit big treys. Otherwise Jackson bemoaned his lack of defense all through the season.

On topic...I hope this second first rounder nets us Mr. Do Everything Josh Hart.

I loved Phil then, I love him now. But Phil is a world class a-hole to the highest degree. He always needed a whipping boy and Rice was it that year. Lakers were #1 in Defensive FG percentage that year. Defense was not an issue that year in the least.

Recent #27 draft picks include Larry Nance Jr. and Rudy Gobert. Give me either of those players at the start of their career in exchange for Lou Williams. Could we blow the pick on some stiff? Of course, but our scouting department has been doing work the last few years. Mitch pulled the trigger, but by all accounts the guys that told him who to draft are still here and on board.

If the Lakers get their top 3 pick, I would be shocked if we see that pick. I have no doubt the Lakers are going after their first star this summer if they get that top 3 pick. Only way I see then not is if they get the first overall pick. Plus, if DAR doesnt show a little more, he may be the carrot the Lakers dangle if they do get Ball or any other stud guard this draft.

Just to address point A: Salary lengths are shorter under the newer CBA. Bad contracts expire quicker, so there are fewer teams in need of a large expiring contract to clean up their books. Less demand = less value.

As for your final point, yes, the Lakers 'could' use Brewer to match salaries IF a trade comes by. But if the Lakers had acquired someone with an expiring contract THIS summer, they could still make that trade work anyway by just utilizing the open cap space. Not to mention that cap space provides far more optionality to the team. That's the point I was trying to make.

Anyway, my original stance was: "Trade is 'meh' since Brewer is owed $8M in 2018. I was hoping to have that number off our books this summer." Several others seem to think we got something of value in Brewer. I just happen to disagree. In some ways, I might even prefer a high 2nd round pick + no Brewer than the #27 + Brewer.
